Some students always have strong personalities in almost everything involving way of learning, while others look forward a good teacher who assists them with their studies. A heated discussion that whether students need a teacher then springs up. In my opinion, the two ways of learning should combines with each other in order to improve our studies.
Certainly, teachers can advance the efficiency of our studies. They demonstrating the prime of knowledge, we grasp the elite of lessons they taught in a short time. In other words, instructions of teachers lead a more easy way in the process of learning. During school period, we may almost have such an experience: If you had been absent-minded in class, you would have spent more time after class - maybe several times the time you spent in school – in making up the lessons taught. That is why concentrating on what the teacher says has always been emphasized by educators. And this quotidian example tells us the significance of a teacher in learning.
The second advantage is that teachers help students when they meet difficult problems puzzling them. Considering this, the function of a teacher is more than a guide of the initial learning. For instance, a mathematic student usually works on vast amount of math problems as an exercise. Probably he will encounter puzzles beyond his ability. Then guidance from a teacher is necessary and crucial to make promotion in the study of the student. On the other hand, learning alone may exclude opportunities to get references helpful, which will require more efforts and end in a less satisfactory result.
Comparing learning with a teacher to a journey with a guide who shows you the itinerary, we can also suppose that self-governing study be an adventure by oneself. And of course, learning by oneself also has its merits.
Obviously, learning independently may benefits the deep understanding of knowledge, because it needs a logical deduction when studying a problem without answers given by others. Learning independently strengthens your logical minds, solidifies what you learnt and expands your perspectives. This way of learning compose a part of so called doing research and therefore is very important to college students. While only an instruction from a teacher, which hardly has such influences as the above, possibly makes you merely scratch the surface of knowledge without incentives of discovering new things.
Another merit is the convenience of the arrangement of studying by oneself. Anyone can decide what to learn, where to learn and when to learn based on his own preference. But relying on a tutor cannot acquire such flexibility.
In conclusion, the two different paths of learning are equally necessary, like the two sides of a corn. They are used for adapting to different purposes of learning and are important especially for college students who need an all-sided means of study. Mutually interacting on each other, they all contribute to the effective learning.
