You can still survive without a car if you live around the campus. But if you are looking for a place immediately next to USC, remember to make sure that the place is located within the service boundaries of the campus cruiser or the tram. USC offers some nice transportation alternatives for people who don't drive, you can refer to this link: http://transserver2.usc.edu/
But there is a trade-off as well: houses located on the cruiser or tram route usually are more expensive. If no relying on tram, riding bicycles is also a good choice. The rule of thumb is that never "walk" alone-- especially during the night.
As for shopping, you can always ask your friend to give you a ride on weekends, so it's not that bad. There are two supermarkets around the school, too, if you don't mind the quality & price of the food
