1、what's the connection between finance and accounting?
Accounting is like a neccessary language for you to learn Finance. It's the base of all finance theories.
2、For those who are not good at maths, can they learn finance.
That depends on which kind of finance area that you want to get into. For Sales and Trading, risk management and Investment Management (mutual funds and hedge funds), quantitative skills are very very important. But for Investment Banking or Company Finance, other skills are much more emphasized.
3、except for the top ten schools, can you recommand some other schools which is relative famous for finance?
I think Berkeley, UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, Kelley, Fisher and Boston College have decent finance programs too.
4 Is it true that top ten school seldom provide scholarship?
i am going to chicago gsb this fall. Is there anything that i should do to better prepare myself before school started? in other words, was there anything that you wish you had done?
i am from an IT background, and I want to switch to an IM career. what would be my chance of getting an internship at a hedge fund/mutual fund without prior experience? or does one have to start from the sell side (IB)? I am gonna take the CFA L1 this June. not sure if it will help my case.
How is this year's internship placement? I heard from several current students that most people had no problem finding internship positions. true?
Congratulations and welcome to join our GSB Chinese MBA family! Sorry for the late answer because we just finished our exam week. Phew!
I think it's time to relax for a little bit after the busy application season. To know about the industry you want to enter and figure out your long term goal (not just the one showed in your essays) is enough.
For Investment Management career, I would say it's very very competitive to get into this industry. A lot of people had interest on this area but finally, above half of them gave up. The interview for fund firms is very quantitative too and you need to spend tons of time to prepare, DCF, stock pitch...It's tough, even for GSB graduates. CFA do helps but your former exposure to this area is much more important.
I don't know the statistics of this year's intern placement yet. But for the big picture, investment banking and consulting firms had very strong recruitment this year. For chinese students, I would say it's always that tough.
I am also admitted by Chicago GSB. my question is relating to renting apartment. I always heard Chicago GSB surrounding area is not that safe. do you live in hyde park? I am thinking of renting the "Neighborhood Student Apartments". Can you give me some opinion about those apartments, such as rental, safety, transportation to school?
cathy, there is a lot of discussion on housing options on the gsb06 yahoo group. You should definitely go and check it out. A group of fellow students will also try to negotiate group deals with Regent (an apartment complex near campus) during admit weekend.
I am a new comer of Chase dream and just saw your post here. Great job!
So glad to meet Chinese GSBer here.
I heard from my friend (Deng Yanbing) that the GSB Chinese Students group will host a dinner for new Chinese admits during Admit weekend, right? Do you know the exact time and location?
I am going to the AW, look forward to meeting you next week!...my name is Yanfei, what is your name?
Congratulations! Most first year students live in Hyde Park. About half move out of here to downtown, Lincoln Park mostly, in their second year. In hyde park, there are a variety of nice places to choose. A luxuirous apartment building, Regents Park, is on the top of the list. There are also several high buildings around Regents Park you might have interest to take a look at. Also, the university apartments are good choices too because most of them are very close to the campus and the price is much more decent. I strongly suggest you consult other students (from the face book at portal. I believe you can log on it now.) and your friends here and ... don't be hurry to make a decision! If you want to live at Regents, remember to find a roommate early (if you need one.) and sign the contract wearly. They might offer some vouchers before July.
I believe we talked at a party at Bro. Jianming's home when you came here to do interview last fall. You asked me a lot of questions about VC, right? See, I have a good memory.:-) I am not sure about the details of the gathering yet but I can check it out later. I will be at the admit weekend to represent our volleyball club and might show up at the gathering at night. Very glad that you will join us and congratulations!
