Like Vincent and Rhod mentioned, "group" is the subject of the that-clause, Not the "birds".

"a group" can include 230 species, "birds" should include >>> 230 species.

做题时还要考虑逻辑关系和题目含义，不是只靠语法结构的。

觉得that作定语修饰 dwellings, and " of being dwellings" modify  "distinction". -----  特别之处 就是 作为.......的dwellings.

还有就是 that从句 如果作同位语 修饰distinction的话 形式上是不是应该是n + that 从句， 而且同位语一般都紧跟所修饰的名词的。 所以that... 只能做定语从句， plus, that。。。修饰distinction 逻辑上不合理， 所以它应该就近修饰 dwellings 的。

呵呵 也不知道对不对。。

字典上distinction的用法！！！！这是他的第三个意思！！！
然后下面是例句！！！！
这应该是一种 介词后面的 动名词
表示和某物的 区别！！！！
it 和 cheapest restaurant 是一类物 但是又有区别
所以就是 it 和 it本身所属的 cheapest restaurant 的区别！！！

the distinction of BEING dwellings 我觉得这种结构最重要的是强调作用，也就是在作为dwellings的同时还需要作为商用。二楼的两个例子也是这样，都是必须突出“作为”这个动作/状态。
D选项they多余，定语从句中先行词也要在句中作成分。
