I was accepted to both Kellogg and Chicago GSB last year and researched the schools rather extensively. Chicago GSB and Kellogg have been friendly rival schools, probably more due to geographical reason than anything else. I have heard all sorts of comments (ranging from kind, interesting, harsh to ridiculous) toward "oh, the other school" , from alums of BOTH schools. Interacting with alums is just one way to learn more about a program, but remember that alums are still people, and people are entitled to their own opinions. Furthermore, despite of what people claim to know about the other school(s), they have only attended their own, and thus their claimed knowledge is probably second-hand information anyway. That said, if you're very clear with your post-MBA career goals, Chicago GSB and Kellogg (and most of other top programs) are different enough in terms of overall focus, philosophy and culture, that it shouldn't be too difficult to find a good fit for you.
Like many have posted, I don't think it's wise to judge a school based on your opinions of a few alums. The sample size is too small to be representative. There are obnoxious alums and students from any school. At this early stage of game, my advice to you is to focus on your application first. While researching schools, talk to as many alums as possible, especially alums who have similar career paths and aspirations. Ask them if they are willing to share what other schools they got accepted, and why they decided to attend their alma mater instead. Ask in their respective career, what their alma mater has done to help them get to where they are today. Do keep in mind that most alums only have good things to say about their alma mater, so it's your job to separate the fluffy from the substance.
Good luck and happy holidays!
