菜鸟第一篇掐时间AA014,请大家帮忙指教

14. The following appeared as part of a newspaper editorial.

“Two years ago laceName>NovalaceName> laceType>High SchoollaceType> began to use interactive computer instruction in three academic subjects. The school dropout rate declined immediately, and last year’s graduates have reported some impressive achievements in college. In future budgets the school board should use a greater portion of the available funds to buy more computers, and all schools in the district should adopt interactive computer instruction throughout the curriculum.”

The author of this argument claims that laceName>NovalaceName> laceType>High SchoollaceType> should buy more computers and all schools in the district should follow the example of laceName>NovalaceName> High School. The evidence cited is that after Nova began to use interactive computer instruction, its dropout rate declined and its graduates have got more impressive achivements. This argument is unconvincing because two questionable assumptions must be made for the stated evidence to support the author's conclusion.

The first assumption is that Nova's decreased dropout rate and better graduates was just because Nova used computer in academic subjects. The assumption is questionable because the author commits the fallacy of assuming that just because on event follows another, the second event has been caused by the first. There may be a lot of other reasons caused the change. For example, Nova High School has changed a new schoolmaster or employed some new teachers. They taught their students with more advanced knowledge which is not existed in this school before. This is just a factor that could help explain the improvement of Nova. Because the author fails to eliminate these possibilities, the assumption in question need not be accepted.

Even if it is granted that computer's using can really bring achievement to graduates and low the dropout rate, another assumption must be made before we can get the conclude that other schools can get such benefit as Nova. We must also assumes that all schools in the district can be the same as Nova if they adopt interactive computer construction. But many kinds of differences may exist among these schools that could affect the computer's effect. We cannot easily assume that all other schools can similarly benefit.

In conclusion, the author's argument is not well reasoned. To strengthen the conclusion, it must be established that computer using is the principal cause of increased achievement of graduates and decreased dropout rate. Once this is shown, it must be determined that all schools in the district are sufficiently like Nova High School, and so can expect similar returns from investment on interactive computer instruction thoughout the curriculum.
