最近在宝石学的进步发现了蓝宝石的独特磷光反应，提供了一种新的识别方法。这种特性在含b和氮的iib形蓝宝石中最常见。在光下面会有蓝到粉甚至到红的光。著名的希望之星就是因其橘红色的光闻名，在黑暗中能亮一分钟。
尽管在sn博物馆中经常展出，很少用于科学研究。只有当ah被展出的极少机会，包括em的研究员才有机会和别的宝石一起研究它。研究包括67个天然的，3个人造的，以及一个改变的灰钻石。研究方式包括用不同波长光照射之后看发光情况。
实验显示当所有的iib型钻石在绿波和红波的照射下发生磷光反应，合成和改变过的在红波下不行。这一发现提供了检验天然钻石的可靠技术，为钻石行业带来巨大挑战。而且天然钻石的磷光反应即使在打碎成小块钻石后也依然不变。
