Main Point: introduce the development of STM, which allows scientists nowadays to explore the minute world
Article Structure:
Part I (P1&2) context setting: object smaller than wvl of visible light was not available to research w/o damaging previously and the main bottle neck is the diffraction that obscures details smaller than 1/2 wvl of radiation
Part II (P3-P5) the process of development of light microscope (organized by key challenges and how scientists resolved them)
- Challenge 1: diffraction issue - solved by Okfee and EA by using pinhole to remove the limit on wvl
- Challenge 2: difficulty to control sample's movement and position - solved by RDY using piezoelectrics
Part III (P6-7): development of STM
- introduction of key parts of STM: probs and piezoelectric controls maneuver the tip and how the tunneling current was formed
- probe moves up and down vertically with topography to stabilize current (Z control) |
