中文回忆:夏威夷岛链是火山hotspot留下来的trail。但它中间为啥突然改变了方向?一个研究团队发现了新的解释。他们用的model非常简单。先来说火山链是怎么形成的呢?在地心的某个地方,特别热的物质上升到了crust,然后融化了就变成了火山。一个火山形成之后,plates从hotspot向更远的地方移动,然后plume怎么样怎么样,就形成了第二个火山。长此以往就形成了chain。夏威夷火山chain就是最著名的例子。model讲起来容易,其实大自然复杂多了。夏威夷火山chain就突然改变了方向。之前很多研究试图解释这一现象,但没有什么特别reliable的。但是新的研究团队就找到了有力的证据。因此可以得出结论并成功发表。接下来介绍了seamounts。以前觉得seamounts也是从hotspot形成的。他们发现seamounts和hotspot形成的火山对不上时间。seamounts的发现让那段时间的好几个event都对上了,显示出这些event之间可能有相关性,同时这样large-scale changes可能也导致了火山链改变方向。
