Dose physical work environment affects employee productivity and who should assume the responsibility of designing the workplace for a business have became a hot topic recently thus raise substantive debates over it. However, as complicated and controversial this issue is, there is no universal answer to it. As for me, I partly agree with the author’s opinion. The following discussion can substantiate my view.
As far as we know, it is generally acknowledged that human beings are the products of a society and always under the spell of the environment, no matter it is nature environment or human environment. Thus, the presenting of working environment indispensably affects our behavior in work place. For example, yellow enhances appetite, blue has a tranquilizing effect, gray is the favorite color of the companies who want to have obedient employees.
However, a fittest workplace environment doesn't necessarily means it requires to be designed by employees themselves. The primary job of a employee is to work assiduously thus best maximize his productivity not waste time on thinking about how to design a more comfortable office for himself. Spend too much time on considering the decoration or permutation of work place will alleviate his attention thus undermine efficiency.
Additionally, a majority of employees don't know what they truly need is, they may have a vague concept of what kind of workplace should be but without concrete specification. Most common employee don't have the professional knowledge of design a scientific feasible workplace which is a compound constituted by both nature factors such as light, airflow and human factors such communication and privacy. So the fittest person to design the work place is still the professional who has lots of background knowledge and experience in interior decoration. By first analyzing the company’s structure and culture and then adding some aesthetic merits into the design most professional designer can satisfy the employees’ need.
Admittedly, in designing the workplace the employees' opinion must be listened and carefully considered for ultimately this will be the environment they have to face every day and comfortable working environment can considerable boost the moral thus improve the productivities.
To conclude, though this issue is complex as it stands, the above aforementioned discussion has walked the first step out of the dilemma. While the importance of a good working environment is undeniable the design job should be still be shouldered by those professionals, only their professional knowledge plus valuable advises of employees can the work place be designed to satisfy most people.
