关于B，也是我最纠结的一个选项，有2点想探讨一下

楼主，我觉得B选项beginning放在（its seeds and its pulp）后面做modifiers很怪啊，应该修饰的是cultivation才恰当吧。不知道能不能算作排除的原因。

今天做了这套题，当时错选了D，后来反思了一下，与楼主说说我的想法。
1）5个选项没有明显的spilts group，所以必须得在读懂句意的基础上逐个判断；
2）句意就像楼主说的，尽管C这种植物可能原产于亚马逊流域上游，但是植物的种子与果肉的初次培养，很显然是在墨西哥和中美洲。
3）把每个选项核心主谓找到 A：cultivation was begun in B：it was cultivated in C: it was cultivated in D beginning appears to be in E. cultivation appears to have begun
4) A选项用主动态begun即可，杀；D选项句意不对，杀。E选项，现在完成时：表示过去发生的动作对现在造成的影响或结果，或者表示过去的动作或状态持续到现在，这里前后文没有特别标明cultivation对现在的影响，也不符合持续到现在，所以杀。
5）比较B和C，B选项的beginning很突兀，如果是为了表达最早、最初的意思，完全可以用It was first cultivated 或者 its cultivation begun
顺便说一句，D选项的错误肯定不是因为Appears to be wordy。 SC有类似正确的句子：While digging in the Egyptian desert, paleontologists have found huge fossil bones from what appears to be the second most massive dinosaur that ever lived.

回过头来看这道题，感觉通透了很多
其实AE因为Redundancy和你刚提到的可以秒排；
B的话，感觉一方面beginning的问题，一方面第二个its最好省略，以及B与C的直接对比（结合句意），C中apparently直接修饰到first非常合理，这三点至少可以得出C＞B
D的话确实句子意思有问题：尽管起源于...但它的开始（起源）..，明显不如C

同学你分析得很棒！  但是有一点想指出， appear to have begun 这里不是完成时， 是（ to begin ）的一般过去～ Ron 有讲过的， to do - do have done

今天剛做錯了這題，檢討的時候查了下以前的資料，對於D我補充幾個看法：(之前做別題的時候Ron提到的)

D後面用了appear to be沒有錯。是因為後面＋prep phrase "in Mexico and Central America"
所以沒有辦法直接寫appear to。
SC裡 appear to be 另外的正確句子：
1. Like the African white and black rhinos, the Sumatran rhino has two horns, but the front one is generally less than a foot long and the second is so small that it often appears to be missing.
2. Researchers in Germany have unearthed 400,000-year-old wooden spears from what appears to be an ancient lakeshore hunting ground, stunning evidence that human ancestors systematically hunted big game much earlier than believed.

appear to be 的問題在於它imply的時間對句意的影響

我引用Ron的原話：
“ by default, "appear" is in the present tense, since we're talking about the way these things appear to present-day observers. 

if there were a context that would place "appear" in the past, then you could use the past tense. for instance: to nineteenth-century observers, they appeared to have been equipped... 
but, absent such a context, you should go with the present, for simplicity (the default assumption is that this "appears" to be the case to present observers). ”

回到D選項 the beginning of its cultivation for seeds and pulp appears to be in Mexico and Central America.
代表這個beginning是“現在”。這就不可以表達intended meaning要表達的內容

A不需要用被动，用主动态began即可
D: The beginning of its cultivation appears to be in Mexico.
Conveyed meaning: It seems that the beginning IS in Mexico RIGHT NOW.
Not the intended meaning.
B中beginning修饰的是it，即是cacao plant，意思不对
E: The first cultivation appears to have begun in Mexico and Central America.
Conveyed meaning:
The first cultivation BEGAN in Mexico and Central America, implying that it CONCLUDED ELSEWHERE.
Not the intended meaning.
Eliminate E.
The intended meaning is that the ENTIRE PROCESS of cultivating the cacao plant took place in Mexico and Central America, as conveyed by the OA:
The cacao plant...was apparently first cultivated in Mexico and Central America.
Here, the usage of first cultivated conveys that -- until its cultivation in Mexico and Central America -- the cacao plant had never been cultivated.

我觉得这里D选项不是因为appear的搭配问题，是因为D选项完全改变了原来的语义！！原文想说的是apparently，也就是说first cultivation for seeds and pulp begun in Mexico and Central America 这件事是“apparently”显而易见的，那么D选项的appear to是好像是...的意思，也就是说是在揣摩、估计，而非“显而易见”的肯定（牛津词典：If you say that something appears to be the way you describe it, you are reporting what you believe or what you have been told, though you cannot be sure it is true）
