142 A gift (such as a camera, a soccer ball, or an animal) can contribute to a child’s development. What gift would you give to help a child develop? Why? Use reasons and specific examples to support your choice.

One of the most exciting issue to a child is to get a gift from adults, especially on birthday. Almost all gifts contribute to a child’s development: a camera keeps special moments; a soccer ball helps to build a strong body and a dog teaches the child to love animals. However, in my opinion, I would take an English dictionary as the most precious gift to a child and enlighten him to study English well.

An excellent grasp of English is the prerequisite to understand industrialized countries well. China is now still at the beginning of a long way to modernization. To accelerate our speed, it’s quite necessary to learn from the experience of most developed countries. Thus, our English must be proficient enough to study technologies, government agencies and even cultures of western societies.

Understanding western countries is only one part of the important aspects. Another equally significant reason can been seen by every one is that English is the official language used by world trade partners. Only when we grasp the language well can we eliminate misunderstanding and facilitate trade with foreign countries. English obviously acts as the tool of multinational business.

Furthermore, we could make more foreign friends if we master English well. With the development of China, more and more foreigners are now choosing to work and live in Shanghai, China’s most prosperous city. To exchange ideas with them would help us learn more about the outside world.

To sum up, given reasons discussed above, we can easily find that English, as a world language, plays an important role and thus, children must master it well in order to understand developed counties, to eliminate misunderstanding in trade and to make more foreign friends. However to learn English well, a good dictionary is a reliable stick. So I choose to send a dictionary, the tool of English learning, to help a child develop.
