HBS 2006 MBA Application Toolbox

HBS

Official website
http://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/apply.html

Class Size:
Approximately 890

Admission Criteria

Each year, our challenge is to select the highest potential leaders from an applicant pool of very talented candidates from around the world. Our selection process emphasizes leadership potential, strong academic ability, and personal qualities and characteristics. Moreover, the MBA Admissions Board aspires to create a class with diverse backgrounds and global perspectives to add to the richness of both the HBS learning experience and the HBS community broadly.

Leadership Potential
We are looking for candidates who have been leaders in a variety of settings: in their extracurricular activities while at college or university, in their workplaces, and in their communities. We will assess your leadership potential through your leadership experiences and accomplishments, as well as through your essays and recommendations.

Strong Academic Ability
We will look closely at your prior academic performance, the results of the GMAT and TOEFL (if applicable), and the nature of your work experience when evaluating your ability to handle the academic rigor of our MBA Program. There is no particular previous course of study required to apply. Given the analytical rigor of our curriculum, however, we do pay particular attention to your ability to master quantitative concepts.

Personal Qualities and Characteristics
We are looking to learn about the personal qualities and characteristics that have contributed to your success as a leader and to understand how you intend to use the MBA experience to reach your career goals. We seek candidates who have the highest ethical standards and respect for others, and who will be actively engaged in the educational process. In our learning model, students teach as they learn, so a commitment to teaching and learning is essential.

There is no minimum work experience requirement for the MBA Program.

It is important for you to assess your own readiness when deciding when to apply. We encourage you to visit campus prior to applying. Successful candidates are able to demonstrate strength in the criteria outlined above, regardless of their number of years of work experience. They include college seniors with significant leadership experience, as well as individuals with full-time work experience.

Admissions Requirements

To be considered for admission, a candidate must submit a complete online application for evaluation by one of the decision round deadlines. The application for the MBA class entering in the fall of 2006 consists of:

Responses to the application essay questions
Current resume
Three recommendations (must be submitted online)
Self-reported transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate academic institutions attended (full- or part-time)
HBS Community Standards Statement
Statement of Application Integrity
GMAT (and TOEFL or IELTS, if applicable) scores
Nonrefundable U.S. $225 application fee (credit card only)
Interview: An evaluative interview is conducted by invitation only, at the discretion of the Admissions Board, after an application has been submitted and reviewed. Fewer than 30% of applicants are invited to interview.
Due to the academic rigor of the MBA Program, applicants are strongly encouraged to complete quantitative introductory courses in areas such as accounting, finance, economics, and statistics prior to entrance. Some candidates may have their acceptance to the MBA Program contingent upon taking such courses prior to their enrollment. Applicants must be able to speak, write, and comprehend English fluently.
Verification: The School will verify application information and reserves the right to withdraw any offer of admission already made if there is any discrepancy between the self-reported information and information provided through verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please find below answers to additional questions that you might have about Harvard Business School. We hope that this list, along with the information we have provided in other areas of this Web site, effectively addresses most of your questions. If you do not find an answer to your question, please contact us at admissions@hbs.edu, and you will receive a reply as soon as possible.

Application
The application instructions strongly recommend submitting applications early in each round. What is the benefit to me for submitting early? We strongly recommend submitting early to allow for technical difficulties or server traffic that may occur on deadline days. To avoid this, please consider submitting your application a day or two before the deadline date. Please note that applications are not reviewed until after the deadline date and are not reviewed in any particular order (they are not read in the order received).

Can I or my recommender send in a recommendation on paper? No. All recommendations must be completed online. It is your responsibility to ensure that all three recommendations are submitted online by the deadline date for the round in which you apply.

I am filling out the online application and I have additional information that I believe is important for the Board to have in evaluating my application. Where should this go?Information such as this should be placed in the Additional Information section of the online application. We ask that you limit your responses to a reasonable length and that you use your judgment when submitting.

How do I report grades for classes that I took for personal development outside of a degree program? If you took classes for your own learning and development (i.e. they did not count towards a degree) feel free to list them in a separate self-reported transcript form and upload that document in the transcript section of the application.

May I upload a scanned transcript in place of the self-reported transcript form? No. Uploading a scanned transcript will delay processing of your application. Please enter the data into the Excel-based transcript form.

When I print the application in PDF format, parts of the application appear truncated, unclear and/or do not appear at all. Are these parts seen by the Admissions Board? The Admissions office receives the entire application in perfect format. The format that the applicant receives is an unformatted version of the final document. All fields are viewed clearly by the Admissions Board.

If I am asked to interview, when should I expect my invitation?Interview invitations for Round 3 will be extended by email from early April through May 11, 2005. It is possible to get an interview invitation any day on or before May 11, 2005.

Class Visits
If I have scheduled a class visit online, where and when should I meet the student host?Class visitors meet the student hosts at Dillon House according to the chart below. Late visitors will not be able to attend class.

Class Start Time Dillon Meeting Time
8:40 am 8:20 am
10:20 am 10:00 am
1:10 pm 12:50 pm

Additional Information
Which GMAT scores must I report on my application? Can my official GMAT scores arrive after the deadline for which I applied? Which GMAT score should I report if I took the test more than once? You must report the unofficial GMAT scores given the day of the test. The official GMAT scores sent by ETS may arrive after the deadline dates. The Admissions Board acknowledges only the GMAT scores submitted on the application.

If I took the GMAT/TOEFL/TWE in the past, how long will those scores be considered valid?GMAT scores are valid for five years. TOEFL/TWE and IELTS scores are valid for two years. If you have applied to HBS in the past and decide to reapply, report your scores on your application but you will NOT need to have the testing services resend your official scores to us if the ones we have are still valid.

What is the average GMAT score? The average GMAT score for the class entering in fall 2004 was 707. However, the Admissions Board hopes that all applicants will recognize the following: that the range of GMAT scores is very broad, that there is no "minimum" score requirement, and that the GMAT is just one piece of data among the many used to evaluate an application.

Program and Procedures
Do you have any executive MBA or part-time programs? The HBS MBA program is a two-year, full-time program that starts in the fall with the summer off between the first and second year. Although we do not offer executive or part-time MBA degree programs, HBS does offer an extensive portfolio of Executive Education programs. For more information, we encourage you to contact Executive Education (www.exed.hbs.edu, 617-495-6555, or executive_education@hbs.edu).

May I apply to the joint MD/MBA Program if I am in the second year of the MD Program? No. Students who are beyond their first year in the MD Program will not be considered for the joint MD/MBA Program.

Can I take courses at HBS without being an admitted student? Students at the other graduate schools of Harvard, M.I.T.'s Sloan School, and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University may cross-register into Elective Curriculum (second year) courses at HBS. For information on cross-registration, please consult with your school's registrar. Other than approved cross-registrants, only admitted full-time HBS MBA students are allowed to enroll in HBS MBA courses.

Can I waive a course in the first year of the program? Are transfer credits accepted?Because our aim is broad, foundational, interactive learning, all MBA students undertake the same course of study during the first year of the program. Individual courses in the first year cannot be waived. HBS does not accept transfer credits.

What is your deferral policy?Candidates should submit applications only for the year they plan to enter the MBA program. Postponements and deferrals are rarely granted and are considered on a case-by-case basis. We may grant deferred admission to a limited number of college seniors who we feel would benefit from and contribute to the MBA Program after some full-time work experience.

Do you give feedback on denied applications? We understand that being denied admission can be a disappointment, and it is natural to want to know the reasons behind the Admissions Board's decision. However, because of the large number of applications we receive each year, we cannot accommodate requests for personalized feedback on your application. Also, please understand that the decision of the Admissions Board is final, and we cannot advise you on whether or not you should reapply in the future. Rejected college senior applicants will be offered feedback, as the information may be especially helpful in their career development process and in modifying future applications.

Experience
I am still an undergraduate student. How long do I need to work before applying?
Traditionally, we have admitted a small number of applicants directly from university each year. We strive to find outstanding leaders at different points in their professional lives. Some applicants may meet this criteria while still in or immediately following undergraduate school, while others may need several years of full-time work experience before they apply. We want outstanding applicants to consider Harvard Business School as an option when they feel that the time is right for them and they can demonstrate the criteria we are looking for.

What is the average length of work experience?
The average number of years of full-time work experience for the class entering in fall 2004 was approximately four years. Please bear in mind that HBS does NOT require a minimum number of years' work experience prior to entering the MBA program, and it is important for you to assess your own readiness when deciding to apply. Successful candidates are able to demonstrate strength in our criteria regardless of the number of years of their work experience.

What is the average age of the MBA class?
At the time of enrollment for the class entering in fall 2004, the median age was approximately 27 years.

Disabled Students
Does HBS have services for students with disabilities?
Assistance is available at HBS for students with visible and invisible disabilities—which may include mobility, vision, hearing, and other physical impairments or health conditions—as well as learning disabilities. Accommodations can be made for short-term disabilities related to accidents or medical conditions and treatments.

Application Deadline Dates

The following are the deadlines for the MBA Class entering in the fall of 2006:

Application submitted online by 5 p.m. EST:
Round 1
Tuesday, October 11, 2005

Round 2
Tuesday, January 3, 2006

Round 3
Tuesday, March 7, 2006
Notification of the Board's decision:
Round 1
Wednesday, January 18, 2006
Round 2
Wednesday, March 29, 2006
Round 3
Wednesday, May 10, 2006
Requests for decisions earlier than the notification dates listed above cannot be accommodated.

Given past experience, we anticipate that many candidates will submit their online application materials very close to 5 p.m. EST on submission deadline dates. To avoid heavy server traffic and potential delays, we encourage candidates to submit application materials as early as possible.

Applications received after 5 p.m. on October 11, 2005 will be considered in Round 2. Applications received after 5 p.m. EST on January 3, 2006 will be considered in Round 3. Applications received after 5 p.m. EST on March 7, 2006 will not be considered.

When should I apply?
Due to the high volume of applications we receive each round, candidates are encouraged to submit their application as early as possible prior to the deadline of each round.

We encourage applicants to apply in the first or second round, as space in the class may be limited by the third round. In addition, applying in the earlier rounds will give candidates more time to address the following:

International candidates may need additional time to arrange for their visas, housing, and financial aid, and to work on their English proficiency.
Some candidates may be required to complete preliminary course work prior to their enrollment.
Many deadlines for outside (non-Harvard Business School) fellowships are in early spring. Only students who have been accepted are eligible for these fellowships.
HBS financial aid decisions are made only after a candidate has been admitted. Knowledge of your financial aid award may help you make important decisions.
Housing is very competitive. Harvard Business School residence halls and Harvard University-affiliated apartments are assigned by lottery. Deadlines for both of these housing options are before Round 3 notification, and you must be admitted to HBS before you can enter these lotteries.

Reapplicants
HBS neither encourages nor discourages candidates from reapplying to the MBA Program. Successful reapplicants are able to demonstrate personal and professional growth achieved through increased opportunities for leadership or improvement in academics.

Application and Fees
All reapplicants are required to complete the application in its entirety. This involves creating a new account for the online application and submitting all required materials. Reapplicants should be aware that GMAT scores are valid for five years and TOEFL or IELTS scores more than two years old will not be accepted. All reapplicants must pay the nonrefundable application fee.

International Students

HBS welcomes applications from around the globe. The admissions criteria applied in evaluating international applicants are the same as those for U.S. citizens. All application materials, including transcripts and recommendations, must be submitted online and in English.

Academic Requirements
An international applicant is required to hold a college or university degree equivalent to a four-year American baccalaureate degree. All post-secondary educational institutions you have attended and received a degree from, including technical and professional schools, should be listed on the application form, using the complete formal names of the institutions and the title of any diploma or degree earned.

Transcripts
When using the online transcript reporting, all courses must be translated into English before submission. If admitted to Harvard Business School, you will be required to provide an official paper transcript sent directly from each college or university attended to World Education Services (WES), a third-party verification agency. If available, your school should send a transcript in English along with the original language document. The School reserves the right to withdraw any offer of admission already made if there is a discrepancy between the self-reported transcript and the official transcript.

TOEFL/TWE and IELTS
In view of the participatory nature of the MBA Program, students must possess a highly developed proficiency in written and oral English. Candidates from non-English speaking countries are required to take the TOEFL and /or IELTS, according to the following guidelines:

Candidates who received their bachelor's degree from an English-speaking university are not required to submit these tests (i.e., they are exempt).
Candidates who received a master's or Ph.D. degree from an English-speaking university are strongly encouraged to submit the TOEFL and/or IELTS.
The Admissions Board discourages any candidate with a TOEFL score lower than 267 from applying.
We strongly urge students from non-English-speaking countries to take the Test of Written English (TWE), now part of the computerized TOEFL.
TOEFL or IELTS scores more than two years old will not be accepted.
Those candidates required to take the TOEFL or IELTS must have received at least their unofficial scores prior to submitting their application. Both overall and component test scores must be reported on the application form.

All applicants must request that ETS (for the TOEFL) and/or IELTS send official copies of their scores to HBS. The Harvard Business School ETS code number is 3444.

To obtain information about these tests, visit: www.toefl.org or www.ielts.org.

When to Apply
The Admissions Board strongly encourages international applicants to apply by the second decision period to allow admitted candidates ample time to address language, visa, housing, and financial aid issues
