Frequently Asked Questions
Please find below answers to additional questions that you might have about Harvard Business School. We hope that this list, along with the information we have provided in other areas of this Web site, effectively addresses most of your questions. If you do not find an answer to your question, please contact us at admissions@hbs.edu, and you will receive a reply as soon as possible.
Application The application instructions strongly recommend submitting applications early in each round. What is the benefit to me for submitting early? We strongly recommend submitting early to allow for technical difficulties or server traffic that may occur on deadline days. To avoid this, please consider submitting your application a day or two before the deadline date. Please note that applications are not reviewed until after the deadline date and are not reviewed in any particular order (they are not read in the order received).
Can I or my recommender send in a recommendation on paper? No. All recommendations must be completed online. It is your responsibility to ensure that all three recommendations are submitted online by the deadline date for the round in which you apply.
I am filling out the online application and I have additional information that I believe is important for the Board to have in evaluating my application. Where should this go?Information such as this should be placed in the Additional Information section of the online application. We ask that you limit your responses to a reasonable length and that you use your judgment when submitting.
How do I report grades for classes that I took for personal development outside of a degree program? If you took classes for your own learning and development (i.e. they did not count towards a degree) feel free to list them in a separate self-reported transcript form and upload that document in the transcript section of the application.
May I upload a scanned transcript in place of the self-reported transcript form? No. Uploading a scanned transcript will delay processing of your application. Please enter the data into the Excel-based transcript form.
When I print the application in PDF format, parts of the application appear truncated, unclear and/or do not appear at all. Are these parts seen by the Admissions Board? The Admissions office receives the entire application in perfect format. The format that the applicant receives is an unformatted version of the final document. All fields are viewed clearly by the Admissions Board.
If I am asked to interview, when should I expect my invitation?Interview invitations for Round 3 will be extended by email from early April through May 11, 2005. It is possible to get an interview invitation any day on or before May 11, 2005.
Class Visits If I have scheduled a class visit online, where and when should I meet the student host?Class visitors meet the student hosts at Dillon House according to the chart below. Late visitors will not be able to attend class.
Class Start Time Dillon Meeting Time 8:40 am 8:20 am 10:20 am 10:00 am 1:10 pm 12:50 pm
Additional Information Which GMAT scores must I report on my application? Can my official GMAT scores arrive after the deadline for which I applied? Which GMAT score should I report if I took the test more than once? You must report the unofficial GMAT scores given the day of the test. The official GMAT scores sent by ETS may arrive after the deadline dates. The Admissions Board acknowledges only the GMAT scores submitted on the application.
If I took the GMAT/TOEFL/TWE in the past, how long will those scores be considered valid?GMAT scores are valid for five years. TOEFL/TWE and IELTS scores are valid for two years. If you have applied to HBS in the past and decide to reapply, report your scores on your application but you will NOT need to have the testing services resend your official scores to us if the ones we have are still valid.
What is the average GMAT score? The average GMAT score for the class entering in fall 2004 was 707. However, the Admissions Board hopes that all applicants will recognize the following: that the range of GMAT scores is very broad, that there is no "minimum" score requirement, and that the GMAT is just one piece of data among the many used to evaluate an application.
Program and Procedures Do you have any executive MBA or part-time programs? The HBS MBA program is a two-year, full-time program that starts in the fall with the summer off between the first and second year. Although we do not offer executive or part-time MBA degree programs, HBS does offer an extensive portfolio of Executive Education programs. For more information, we encourage you to contact Executive Education (www.exed.hbs.edu, 617-495-6555, or executive_education@hbs.edu).
May I apply to the joint MD/MBA Program if I am in the second year of the MD Program? No. Students who are beyond their first year in the MD Program will not be considered for the joint MD/MBA Program.
Can I take courses at HBS without being an admitted student? Students at the other graduate schools of Harvard, M.I.T.'s Sloan School, and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University may cross-register into Elective Curriculum (second year) courses at HBS. For information on cross-registration, please consult with your school's registrar. Other than approved cross-registrants, only admitted full-time HBS MBA students are allowed to enroll in HBS MBA courses.
Can I waive a course in the first year of the program? Are transfer credits accepted?Because our aim is broad, foundational, interactive learning, all MBA students undertake the same course of study during the first year of the program. Individual courses in the first year cannot be waived. HBS does not accept transfer credits.
What is your deferral policy?Candidates should submit applications only for the year they plan to enter the MBA program. Postponements and deferrals are rarely granted and are considered on a case-by-case basis. We may grant deferred admission to a limited number of college seniors who we feel would benefit from and contribute to the MBA Program after some full-time work experience.
Do you give feedback on denied applications? We understand that being denied admission can be a disappointment, and it is natural to want to know the reasons behind the Admissions Board's decision. However, because of the large number of applications we receive each year, we cannot accommodate requests for personalized feedback on your application. Also, please understand that the decision of the Admissions Board is final, and we cannot advise you on whether or not you should reapply in the future. Rejected college senior applicants will be offered feedback, as the information may be especially helpful in their career development process and in modifying future applications.
Experience I am still an undergraduate student. How long do I need to work before applying? Traditionally, we have admitted a small number of applicants directly from university each year. We strive to find outstanding leaders at different points in their professional lives. Some applicants may meet this criteria while still in or immediately following undergraduate school, while others may need several years of full-time work experience before they apply. We want outstanding applicants to consider Harvard Business School as an option when they feel that the time is right for them and they can demonstrate the criteria we are looking for.
What is the average length of work experience? The average number of years of full-time work experience for the class entering in fall 2004 was approximately four years. Please bear in mind that HBS does NOT require a minimum number of years' work experience prior to entering the MBA program, and it is important for you to assess your own readiness when deciding to apply. Successful candidates are able to demonstrate strength in our criteria regardless of the number of years of their work experience.
What is the average age of the MBA class? At the time of enrollment for the class entering in fall 2004, the median age was approximately 27 years.
Disabled Students Does HBS have services for students with disabilities? Assistance is available at HBS for students with visible and invisible disabilities—which may include mobility, vision, hearing, and other physical impairments or health conditions—as well as learning disabilities. Accommodations can be made for short-term disabilities related to accidents or medical conditions and treatments.
