-19 Should government spend more money on improving roads and highways, or should governments spend more money on improving public transportation (buses, trains, subways)? Why? Use specific reasons and examples to develop your essay.
Whether government should spend more money on improving roads and highways or on improving public transportation is a hot topic today. There are some people who think that investing on roads and highways is wonderful but the others might prefer investing on public transportations such as buses, trains and subways. As far as I am concerned, I would probably follow the latter. In the following discussion I would like to reason and provide evidence to support my viewpoint.
No issue is more important than the one that an advanced public transportation helps to reduce air pollution. We all know that autos release harmful gases when burning oils. The more the vehicles are on the road, the more serious the pollution is. If government could take measures to improve the conditions of public transportation, for example, purchasing more air-conditioned buses or lifting the speed of subways, more and more people will be attracted to use public transportation. As a result, the number of vehicles on the road will decline and the total amount of pollution gas released by them will also decrease.
Saving money for people is another chief and head reason that I have chosen to put here. Without an advanced public transportation, people would have to drive their own cars or motors and afford a series of costs including fuel, road toll, parking fee or maintenance bill, etc. However, if government could set up an excellent public transportation system for its citizens, people can take subways or buses instead and will only pay for a subway or bus ticket. It is obvious that a good public transportation system contributes to reduce people’s money spent on transportation.
Superior as spending money on improving public transportation is, however spending money on roads and highways also has its own merits, too. For example, driving on roads and highways would become safer. Nevertheless, the advantages of spending money on public transportation carries more weight than those of spending money on roads and highways. Therefore, the conclusion is striking and obvious.
To sum up, given reasons discussed above, which sometimes intertwine to form an organic whole and thus become more persuasive, we can safely reach the conclusion that spending money on improving public transportation is better than spending money on improving roads and subways. In fact, I would even prefer government to invest as much money as possible on public transportation because it will benefit to all the citizens in my city.
