Topic (TWE077): Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Boys and girls should attend separate schools. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
It is common knowledge that boys and girls have different periods in their physical and mental growth. As a result, quite a few people hold the standpoint that children should attend separate schools in terms of these tremendous distinctions. Although there are pros and cons to either situation, I totally disagree with this opinion. I will explore a few conspicuous aspects by the following reasons.
First of all, if they have attended these schools, there would have been few chances for them to communicate with the opposite gender, which will become a handicap for them to communicate with each other in the future. In the real world, men and women are always there, binding together a harmonious society. Those who come from the single-gender schools are not accustomed to the environment outside school, because such schools give them a feeling that God only create one gender in the world, though they know it will be never true. Once they are forced to go out of school, which is bound to happen one day, they will be nervous or inexperienced in dealing with the relations with the opposite gender, not to mention building a happy family. In a word, single-gender schools may make the students grow abnormally, without knowing the integrated world.
There is another fact that deserves noticing. Since boys and girls actually have distinct characters and abilities, education system should exert more efforts to make them achieve a balance growth. Living together, they can help each other both in study and personality. Boys are born to excel in natural science, such as math and physics; they can help girls develop their rational thinking. In the contrast, girls are endowed with talent in liberal arts; they are responsible to assist boys to make some common sense in these subjects. Moreover, when they dig their communication further, boys can exert a subtle influence on girls as to braveness, whereas girls enable boys to acquire the gorgeous feature of carefulness.
Of course, attending single-gender schools have some merits. The education can be more efficient because the school can teach them differently according to their personality. Furthermore, while the distraction from members of the opposite gender is eliminated, it is academically beneficial for students to concentrate on their study, and girls in all-female schools can establish self-esteem in many fields which are conventionally thought to be just accessible by men. Finally, traditional gender stereotype are often reinforce in single-gender schools, so boys and girls can build stronger personality per se.
In conclusion, I disagree with the statement that boys and girls should attend separate schools. It is co-ed schools that provide them with good environment for their physical and, more important, mental growth. |
