Surely every school wants the same fundamental things fromcandidates at the end of the day? The obvious list of universal qualities thatevery academic institution is surely looking for might include:
λ                Potential
λ                Academicskills/ qualities
λ                Motivation
λ                Passion
λ                Personalskills/ qualities
λ                Writing/thinking ability
λ                Forward-lookingmindset
λ                Work/practical experience
λ                Presentation/communication skills
Who wouldn't want the person with all theseimpressive traits? Therefore there's no difference between UK and USstatements, right?
Of course all the traits listed above are important (in both US andUK contexts), but it would be exceptional (or arrogant!) for an ambitiouscandidate to profitably halt his or her analysis at this point.
Academic excellence is all aboutchallenging assumptions and working towards a systematic picture of the waythings truly are. It will be helpful to you—as a candidate who is seeking toget into the best school you possibly can—if your attitude to the applicationitself clearly reflects the intellectual disposition and ability you want toproject to your target school.
Higher education applications are fiercelycompeted and infused with opportunity to make life-long enhancements inindividual prospects. They are worth your time. So, inevitably, you're upagainst lots of other people who are each focusing hard on how to make animpact on his or her audience.
(Context is everything)
What's the difference about PS for US and for UK? If there'sdifference, how much is the difference?
This is a good question to ask because itmeans you're thinking about your audience and their context. The context willshape what the reader wants to get when they read your application; youranalysis of what this adds up to can shape your strategy.
The key differences are X, Y and Z. The degree of difference is 65%.You should make adjustments to A, B and C when making a UK application.
λ                Institution-specificfactors: Such as budgetary concerns or a school's unique application-readingprocedures...can, for example, interact with:
λ                totallysubjective factors: E.g. The temperament of the reader (or readers) who assessyour statement.
But just because the process is complex does not mean we can'tderive certain consistencies or trends in practices. And there is value inshowing you are smart enough to have figured out certain location-specific cuesand modes of language, but do not over-apply these ideas at the expense oflooking closely at your specific target institutions and figuring out what theywant (which may be very different from other schools in the same country).
I'm writing this article using American spelling (color, labor, etc.) because I anticipate that a larger proportion of the audience will beapplying to US schools. That sort of gesture to one's audience makes sense tome. And while you can certainly observe characteristic traits amongthe denizens of the UK or Australia or the USA or China, you may often findyourself dealing in generalizations that are so large they are practicallymeaningless (some might call them stereotypes), and it is not wise to casuallygeneralize when making important decisions or judgements or, indeed, your casefor admission to the well-reputed institution of your choice!
According to Dr Leif Jerram, Senior Lecturer in Modern History,University of Manchester, '[t]he difference between personal statements in theUSA and the UK focuses in on what one might call 'sobriety'.'
(American personal statements tend to be full of dreams and privateexperience:
'Ever since watching Harry Potter, I havealways wanted to study in England...'
(They contain much flattery:
'The University of Citytown has an enviableglobal reputation in...'
(British prose writing is more sober, factual and instrumental.
For example, the dream might be expressedas:
'My career plans focus on working in theautomotive design industry, and the UK's excellence in this field makes anatural fit'
(And the flattery would be absent - in its place would be soberdetails:
'Professor Smith's research into thesociology of cities, combigned with the strong publications in Anthropology inspatial theory, make the University of Citytown's MA in Urban Studies anobvious choice for someone wishing to pursue a PhD in spatial theory.'
Apart from the negative tone with which the generalizations aboveare presented, they are also unhelpful because of they make broad assertionsthat 'UK writing is like X' and 'US writing is like Y' withoutinforming you about why that might be commonly perceived to be the case.
Incorporating a deeper understanding ofwhat is important in a US/ UK context—and why—will enable you to make astrategy for your statement that avoids the pitfalls of being transparentlyformulaic, simplistic or pandering to one perceived 'national style' oranother.
There are clear differences between the UK and US higher educationsystems. Rather sensibly, these differences are reflected in the respectivepriorities of typical admissions processes in these countries when appraisingcandidates.
Subject-focused <> Liberal arts
United Kingdom
Standard UK degrees are three years inlength and therefore there is more exclusive focus on one subject from thestart.
Accordingly, there is more expectation thatcandidates will articulate specific academic specialities. If you can demonstrateexceptional talent in one particular subject and a commitment to growing yourknowledge and skills in a specific discipline, this may be preferred.
United States
US degrees generally last for four yearsand allow for a greater breadth of subjects; although you will ultimately focuson a major (usually chosen at the end of your second year), you'll also betaking classes in a number of unrelated subjects.
A student with exceptional talent in oneparticular subject may be valued equally to an exceptional 'all-rounder'.Demonstrable open-mindedness and curiosity are therefore prioritized in the US,because they are seen as hallmarks of individuals who will get the most out ofthe education on offer.
Admissions office staff <>Academic faculty staff
United Kingdom
Academic faculty in the department to whichyou are applying (the people who will be teaching you) have the say on whichapplicants are offered a place.
Academic staff are experts in their field, therefore you should use your knowledge and informed opinions regarding therelevant subject to demonstrate your appeal.
United States
Admissions office staff for the wholeuniversity make the decisions. In the UK admin staff are there to supportacademics in making their decision.
Admissions officers may well have a veryworkable understanding of the subject you are applying for, however his or herfocus will be what will make you a valuable member of the university community.
Overall school community <>Subject-specific community
United Kingdom
There is more emphasis on the academicparts of a candidate's application.
Extracurriculars to UK institutions in somecases, if the writer uses them to demonstrate that he or she is a well-roundedindividual with transferrable skills, or—more commonly—to understand why anapplicant’s grades are not strong, these are not the operative factor.Nonetheless, they are less likely to be the operative factor in swinging anapplication in the candidate's favor.
United States
The priority of the admissions officer isfocused more widely: On creating a community of students who will activelycontribute to university life.
Accordingly, extracurricular activities(sports, music, part-time jobs, leadership roles, volunteer work, etc.) aremuch more important to provide context to your academic achievements andthereby provide evidence that you will actively contribute to university life.
In addition, standardized test scores(which make many candidates look very similar academically) render the functionof the essay much more focused on individual differentiation in the US system.Essays emphasize being interesting, entertaining, and engaging to a greaterextent because the way in which the essay is used by admissions staff makes itprofitable (in some cases) to write in this way.
These are some features of the institutional and cultural landscapethat you should keep in mind when planning strategies for an undergraduatestatement. Obviously there are many other cleavages between US and UK schools, but the best possible advice I can give you is to be aware of the factors above;be active and curious in your consideration of the system you are engaging withas an applicant, and allow a deeper understanding of factors such as those Ihave highlighted above to inform but not define your strategy.
Empty your mind,(清空你的思绪)
Be formless, shapeless, like water.
Now you put water into a cup, it becomesthe cup;
You put water into a bottle, it becomes thebottle;(你将水倒入瓶子,它就成为瓶子的形状)
You put it into a teapot, it becomes theteapot.(你将水倒入茶壶,它就成为茶壶的形状)
Water can flow, or it can crash;(水可缓流,也能急冲)
Be water, my friend.
