a new JJ from Toronto (21/8/03)

Ha! Glad that I have at last finished the TOEFL. Tow months, 10 hours study everyday, all has been the past. Ok, in the last few days, I get much from the web. I don’t think JJ is very helpful, but it is good for your psychology. Now it is my turn to make some contribution to peers.
I took the TOEFL on 21st, in Toronto. ( 30- 25- 55)

Listening comprehension:

Part A:
I really admired that some people can remember many details of the test, but I can’t. I can’t remember anything for part A. But I am sure I didn’t meet JJ ( I have read the JJ from last Nov. to this Aug.). So I think in the Part A you have to mainly rely on your ability. The difficult lever is equal with PP. At the subjects are about the life in campus.

Part B:

1, about the Maya culture. It was very long and I didn’t understand completely, expect some separate words. The main idea was about religious, calendar, art and some what influence the writing system of the Maya. Another point was their writing system had an unique feature, it was not reflect sound. Q1: the main idea? Q2: the author imply he believe all other writing system…? Other 2 forget.  This was the first and most difficult one. Others, I think, are all similar with the paragraphs in PP.

2, A long talk about the catalogue of the instruments. There are 6 kinds of instruments, in the lecture, the speaker explained two, and open the third. The first is Pxx (given on the screen). They produce sound by vibrating air, EX: drum. The second is Ixx (given). They produce sound by vibrating the instrument material itself. EX : a instrument that we don’t know. Q1: mainly about? A: method to catalogue instrument. Q2: how to catalogue? A: how to produce the sound. Q3: match question, Pxx – drum; Ixx – xx; another choice is trumpet, don’t use it. Last Q I forget, sorry.

3, a long conversation, about select courses. Gg is a economic major. He will select courses for next semester and want select a courses outside his major, such as literature… a mm advice him to select anthropology, saying it is interesting. Gg was talked in and decide to check the courses’ list to see the schedule. Q1: main topic. A: select courses. Q2: what gg will do? A: check the courses list. Another I forget.

4, A TA chairman a seminar and a gg and a mm discussion. It is about an article. The first sentence have a Q. I didn’t catch it. I guess it is “review a reading assignment to prepare test.” (it should be right, since my score for listening is 28 and all 4 Qs for the first paragraph were done by guess.)  The article is about a lotus. Its flower can keep the temperature inside constant, even in cold night. The reason is not clear yet. The benefits are speed the growth of bloom and attract the insect to pollinate (have a double-choice Q). Q1, Q2 above mentioned. Q3: the feature of the plants? A: constant flower temperature.

5, short conversation: a gg and a mm talk about gg’s professor will enter a conference to present his recent research study. It is exactly the same as JJ.

6, another is also seen in JJ, but I forget.

Reading:

1, about harsh life of the first settler in US west.
2, about the university in early 19 century.
3, about the dance gesture of native American.
4, 5, forget.


Writing:

If a university will establish a research center in your country, which do you prefer, business or agriculture?

At last, by the way, think you, brother TanHuang. Your work make many people like me feel confidence in the test. And also good luck, all the brothers and sisters are hard working to challenge EST.
