求finance phd 申请定位

本人研究生港大经济硕士专业，本科211财经大学，专业是工商管理类。本科均分87，研究生全A. pass with distinction.但香港硕士不要求写论文。牛paper无，牛推荐无。gmat 760,toefl 102.有过些实习经验。刚读研究生时候试着申请了一下美国香港phd.包括港大，港中大，港科，美国umd,雪城，明尼苏达，以及utsa。收到面试有utsa 和港中大，不过全军覆没。。求再申请定位。这次唯一优势就是有研究生全A成绩。因为失败过一次，现在格外慎重。因为前期成本投入实在太大。希望这次保守一点。希望一起申请的大家加油。。失败不可怕，了解自己更重要。

In my opinion, u will pass the first round of review which is the cutoff based on gpa and GMAT at any school, and your application will transfer to the related discipline department  for second review. During this phase, the committee will look at your research  potential such as recommendation from the fellows and any research you have done. Strong recommendation usually come from thesis advisor or ra supervisor. That's your serious weakness In your case, I would recommend targeting t50-t100. Applicant like you should land somewhere but for any physical place it is hard to say.

Thanks!! very professional suggestion. I will try to apply for the 50-100. Do you have some suggestion about the specific choice? Do you think it necessary to try to contact some potential professors?

I wish I could but the huge caveat being again I'm not in finance. For your second question, answer is no. If you contact, say 20 professors, I think about 5 will not reply you at all, another 5 will send you a very very general email. some other answers could be "I am interested in working with you IF you are admitted", "please feel free to call me and discuss". The reason why not to contact them directly is they really have no control on admission decision unless they are highly respected, dean or distinguish professor. BUT, please put yourself on their shoes, will you really help someone you have no idea, random people met on the internet?

think another way, can you think of how many email they receive every year and say similar things and story. I would suggest only send to someone you have already known or connection.

I appreciate for your suggestion anyway. Applying for PHD really requires huge effort and preparation. Also, kind of luck and fate. A lot of things are beyond our control and we need to think more comprehensivelly. But go for it and try hard. Good luck all companions, wish all receive good news.

I am not in accounting but I would like to give you my two cents. I assumed you have a decent GPA and I think OSU is a high second tier school, along with you GMAT (good but not competitive in accounting), so adcom would not worry too much about your academic capacity. However, without strong letters that can articulate your research potential, it may call adcom's attention on whether you could become a successful researcher. Also, you probably cannot write an eye-catching SOP as you really don't have too much to say about reserach (in terms of hand on experience). So just apply widely, 1-2 top30, 1-2 top50, 10 from top50 to top100. The embarrassing moment comes when you receive an offer, say from a top 75 or top100 which you may not want to go.

If you really want to work at an elite research school after phd, you may consider the following and apply for 2017.
1. Find professors to work or RA with (probably receive good letters and result in a few conference papers or manuscripts under review for publication)
2. Retake your GMAT and try to get 750+
You should have a different story by completing them. Anyway, just apply for 2016 and see how it goes.
