Clearly, therefore, charges that the manufacturer’s program has not met its goal are false.

Q16:

In response to mounting pubic concern, an airplane manufacturer implemented a program with the well-publicized goal of reducing by half the total yearly amount of hazardous waste generated by its passenger-jet division.  When the program began in 1994, the division’s hazardous waste output was 90 pounds per production worker; last year it was 40 pounds per production worker. Clearly, therefore, charges that the manufacturer’s program has not met its goal are false.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A.  The amount of nonhazardous waste generated each year by the passenger-jet division has not increased significantly since 1994.

B.   At least as many passenger jets were produced by the division last year as had been produced in 1994.

C.   Since 1994, other divisions in the company have achieved reductions in hazardous waste output that are at least equal to that achieved in the passenger-jet division.

D.  The average number of weekly hours per production worker in the passenger-jet division was not significantly greater last year than it was in 1994.

E.   The number of production workers assigned to the passenger-jet division was not significantly less in 1994 than it was last year.

T-4-Q32

Delta products, Inc., has recently switched at least partly from older technologies using fossil fuels to new technologies powered by electricity. The question has been raised whether it can be concluded that for a given level of output, Delta’s operation now causes less fossil fuel to be consumed than it did formerly. The answer, clearly, is yes, since the amount of fossil fuel used to fenerate the electricity needed to power the new technologies is less than the amount needed to power the older technologies, provided that the level of output is held constant.

In the argument given, the two boldface portions play which of the following roles?

  1. The first identifies the content of the conclusion of the argument; the second provides support for that conclusion.

  2. The first provides support for the conclusion of the argument; the second identifies the content of that conclusion.

  3. The first states the position that the argument opposes; the second states the conclusion of the argument.

  4. Each provides evidence that calls the conclusion of the argument into question.

  5. Each provides support for conclusion of the argument.

T-4-Q38

In one state, all cities and most towns have antismoking ordinances, a petition entitled “Petition for Statewide Smoking Restriction” is being circulated to voters by campaign workers who ask only, “Do you want to sign a petition for statewide smoking restriction?” The petition advocates a state law banning smoking in most retail establishments and in government offices that are open to the public.

Which of the following circumstances would make the petition as circulated misleading to voters who understand the proposal as extending the local ordinances statewide?

  1. Health costs associated with smoking cause health insurance premiums to rise for everyone and so affect nonsmokers.

  2. In rural areas of the state, there are relatively few retail establishments and government offices that are open to the public.

  3. The state law would supersede the local antismoking ordinances, which contain stronger bans than the state law does.

  4. There is considerable sentiment among voters in most areas of the state for restriction of smoking.

  5. The state law would not affect existing local ordinances banning smoking in places where the fire authorities have determined that smoking would constitute a fire hazard.

我同意B

Five hundred million different species of living creatures have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent of them vanishing.

  1. Five hundred million different species of living creatures have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent of them vanishing.(感觉主句时态不好,这么多生物既然一直存活到现在了,又何所谓消失了呢?

  2. Nearly 99 percent of five hundred million different species of living creatures that appeared on Earth have vanished.

  3. Vanished are nearly 99percent of the five hundred million different species of living creatures that appeared on Earth.(这里应该是倒装,但既没有道理倒装,也不应该是被动)

  4. Of five hundred million different species of living creatures that have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent of them have vanished.(跟A的理由一样)

  5. Of the five hundred million different species of living creatures that have appeared on Earth, nearly 99 percent have vanished.(同上)

Q16:

Clearly, therefore, charges that the manufacturer’s program has not met its goal are false.

不同意,原文中提出goal:reducing by half the total yearly amount of hazardous waste ,这是一个总量的概念,得出这个结论的原因是in 1994, the division’s hazardous waste output was 90 pounds per production worker; last year it was 40 pounds per production worker.

The spraying of pesticides can be carefully planned, but accidents, weather conditions that could not be foreseen, and pilot errors often cause much larger deposits of spray than they had anticipated.

(A) weather conditions that could not be foreseen, and pilot errors often cause much larger deposits of spray than they had

(B) weather conditions that cannot be foreseen, and pilot errors often cause much larger deposits of spray than

(C) unforeseeable weather conditions, and pilot errors are the cause of much larger deposits of spray than they had

(D) weather conditions that are not foreseeable, and pilot errors often cause much larger deposits of spray than

(E) unforeseeable weather conditions, and pilot errors often cause much larger deposits of spray than they had

T-9-Q2.

Kernland imposes a high tariff on the export of unprocessed cashew nuts in order to ensure that the nuts are sold to domestic processing plants. If the tariff were lifted and unprocessed were sold at world market prices, more farmers could profit by growing cashews. However, since all the processing plants are in urban areas, removing the tariff would seriously hamper the government ‘s effort to reduce urban unemployment over the next five years.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument?

  1. Some of the by-products of processing cashews are used for manufacturing plants and plastics

  2. Other countries in which cashews are processed subsidize their processing plants

  3. More people in kernland are engaged in farming cashews than in processing them

  4. Buying unprocessed cashews at lower than world market prices enables cashew processors in kernland to sell processed nuts at competitive prices

  5. A lack of profitable crops is driving an increasing number of small farmers in kernland off their land and into the cities
