This page is not accessible on the internet. Could you post the overview on this thread?

Many thanks!

以下是引用wwwzzz在2005-8-23 10:58:00的发言:

I venture to give my 2 cent on the later question as I've already spent a year there.

As you may know at Chicago GSB, cirriculum planning is completely your own decision, so everyone has his/her own schedule and preferences according to his/her professional goals and personality. "One man's meat can be another's poison." Also, the professor's way of teaching and "charms" play a big role in the students' evaluation of the same class. We have some "star" professors who constantly receive excellent ratings from their past students. They are basically in every business area GSB covers and teach courses from entry to PhD levels. So you don't have to worry that you cannot find a "good" course to take if you are interested in some less "popular" concentrations.

Once you are enrolled, you will have access to internal ratings of courses during the past years. As we use the bidding system to select classes, you can also get some hint from the past "prices" of classes. Finally and most importantly, you can talk to second year students in the same career path, AND sit in the classes yourself (the school gives a week after classes begin to allow students "drop and swap" at no expenses).

OK, back to the topic of favorite courses, here's my personal opinion:

From day one, my mind was set on consulting after MBA, so I have mainly chosen courses that are counted towards concentrations of "Strategic Management" and "Marketing". Within these two areas I have enjoyed "Management Lab" the most, which was taken in the last quarter of my first year. A team of 7 students were assigned to work on a real-world consulting project, with two instructors who gave advice, not guidance. There was a lot of work (6 hours in "formal class meetings" and 40-50 extra hours per week) and we went from confusion to frustration to enlightment to excitement... I was able to make use of what I have learned about strategic thinking, marketing and team-working during the previous GSB classes, in a real (not simulated) setting of a consulting firm.

Another favorite course of mine, taught in the "traditional" lecture way, is "Marketing Strategies". The professor was able to combine "frameworks" with actual marketing campaigns going on, which greatly improved our understanding of how marketing decisions are made and what our future careers in marketing and consulting would be like.

My least impressed class was, well, I'd rather not mention the specific name, cuz you may actually like it! In fact I am deeply attracted to most courses I've chosen, thanks to the decision of focusing on what I am really interested in, not what others are into. For example, had I followed the trend to take "advanced accounting" or "analytical finance" courses, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed my first year as much...But that is not to say those courses are useless...

Thanks, wwwzzz! (Just don't get what wwwzzz mean. Sleeping? Crying?...)

Machinegun,

Thanks for providing us so much useful information regarding application.

I have to say that GSB is my dream school for MBA and I have strong ambition to continue my career in finance and banking area in the future. Just want to ask you some question regarding the application, especially IMBA.

  1. I graduated from a top university in Shanghai. However, my GPA is not high enough, 3.2-3.3, mainly because I was admitted as a member of 本硕联读班, in which most difficult courses were required in the first year. I changed my major to school of management after first semester. The scores in本硕联读班 really hurt my GPA. I wonder whether it will be a big problem in the application.

  1. I just took my GMAT test, 710 94% percentile. It’s not an impressive score, but I wonder whether it is sufficient to make my application pass the screening.

  1. Currently, I have only 3 years experience. I started my career as a management trainee in a foreign commercial bank for the 1st and 2nd year of my career, and was sent to HK for secondment in the 3rd year. Recently, I got a Permanent Offer from our HK office as a Marketing & Credit Manager, thus will be permanently transfered to HK. Therefore, it is highly likely that I will submit my application in HK. Will I be considered together with applicants from HK? Will the banking experience in HK be of help to my application?

  1. I am quite interested in IMBA and want to know more about its admission process. Once as an exchange student to Japan during my high school and speaking fluent Japanese level, I passed Japanese TOEFL in university with high score. I wonder whether this will make me qualified as an IMBA applicant.

  2. I am CFA Level 2 candidate. Will this strengthen my overall application? because I want to concentrate on finance area.

Thanks & Regards

looks like GSB's non-cosigner loan term is not good as other programs.

only $30000 for one year and pretty high interest rate.

Any revision of the loan term?

Hi Princeming,

1. Your GPA will not hurt you as long as you could demonstrate that you can handle the demanding courses here in GSB. The adcom will see your GMAT, TOEFL and ohter academic achievement as the indicator too.

2. Your GMAT is not that impressive. But one of our second-years got admitted with 690. GMAT score is not the only benchmark that adcom looks at, the adcom people look at the whole picture, the overall strength of the applicant. If you really think that your GMAT score will hurt you, try again or highlight your other significant achievements to balance.

3. I dont know. It sounds good that you have different culture immersion.

4. As I know that IMBA applicant goes the same road as other applicant. Your lingual advantage will strengthen your profile. But you have to explain how you Japanese fluence would help or make you stand out in your future career.

5. Definitely helpful. The CFA test is a plus which demonstrate your commitment and academic strength.

You are welcome.

Good luck!
