Some were from the old artisan class of slavery-blacksmiths, masons, carpenters-which had had a monopoly of certain trades, but they were gradually being pushed out by competition, mechanization, and obsolescence.

They 是否指代blacksmiths, masons, carpenters?

我认为,which指the old artisan class of slavery-blacksmiths, masons, carpenters;they指class;had had是过去完成时。

但对于指代, 我又想了一下,请看我的理解是否正确:which 指the old artisan class of slavery-blacksmiths, masons, carpenters, 我完全同意.

you are welcome.^_^。

they指some好。

About thirty-five percent of the urban Black population in the South was engaged in skilled trades. Some were from the old artisan class of slavery-blacksmiths, masons, carpenters-which had had a monopoly of certain trades, but they were gradually being pushed out by competition, mechanization, and obsolescence. The remaining sixty-five percent, more recently urbanized, worked in newly developed industries---tobacco, lumber, coal and iron manufacture, and railroads.
