Q: A university plans to develop a new research center in your country. Some people want a center for business research. Other people want a center for research in agriculture (farming). Which of these two kinds of research centers do you recommend for your country? Use specific reasons in your recommendation.
Agriculture was once considered to be the most fundamental as well as the essential part of our national economy in China. Nevertheless, with the open of our door, more and more Chinese people come to realize the importance of business. It is not wise to isolate ourselves from the outdoors any longer. Instead, we must pursue as much as possible to trade with other nations so as to make our country economically powerful. Therefore, if we have to make a choice to set up between a business research center and an agricultural research center, I would side the former with following three specific reasons.
The main reason why I advocate a business research center is that a nation depending on agriculture can never grow into an advanced country. We cannot lag in an agriculture era, which other developed countries such as the USA, Japan and Germany have already surpassed. Rather, they wisely put more efforts on business issues, and consequently gain prosperous economy.
In addition, with the opening policy penetrating into our Chinese mind, we now face an unprecedented opportunity to develop our own business theory. Chinese is now undergoing a booming period of both commercial market and financial market, where a great number of native people have been attracted to engage, while few of them really grasp the principles of these new tools. Accordingly, a business research center becomes imperative for those showing fascination towards the market economy.
Finally, to make successful deals with foreigners requires a large amount of professional knowledge and skills. That is to say, learning the domestic laws and rules is not enough, and we should learn how to be world-wide. Since most of us are less informed in this field, we can be imparted such sort of lore from a business research center.
There is no wonder that China has benefited a lot from the business world. Why should we decline the opportunity to keep the pace with the global trend rather than focusing on agriculture? It is the proper time for us to make a wise and historical choice. |
