Choice B offers the correct infinitive, to provide, but contains the faulty so as to. Choice D is best.

171. In 1527 King Henry VIII sought to have his marriage to Queen Catherine annulled so as to marry Anne Boleyn.

The sentence calls for an adverbial clause of purpose to explain why Henry sought the annulment. D, the best choice, does this clearly and correctly. It is introduced by an appropriate conjunction, so that, and contains a logically appropriate verb form, could marry. Awkward and imprecise, A does not specify who is to marry Anne. B substitutes an illogical coordinate predicate for the needed purpose clause; because the annulment had not yet been granted. Henry could not remarry. C lacks an appropriate conjunction, and the infinitive clause to be married to ... makes this choice awkward and unidiomatic. Although E uses an appropriate conjunction, in order that, the verb form would marry is unidiomatic and illogical (might marry would be better).

请问大家：in order that作为连词的时候，到底有什么要求。看以前的帖子，好像很多人都说是因为主句和从句的主语要一致。我也没看很明白。为什么上面这两题，一个说in order that可以，一个说不可以？  还请大家看看！！ 多谢了！！

首先以前的讨论说in order that后面的主语如果和前面不一致的，但是根据Longman中的例句：She believes that it was right to leave in order that somebody more deserving could receive her place. 似乎上面的结论有欠商榷。

我自己察了些资料感觉in order that后面如果主语变换的话，不能用代词，否则就想OG67说的，inprecise。

谢谢紫草MM给出的例句，不过好像只有一个是in order that的，一个主语是sunlight一个主语是the process。你用这个例句是不是想说明in order that的主语可以不和主语一样，是吗？如果是的话，为什么OG67in order that不好，是不是象aqurius说得，用代词不行容易有歧异呢？

再次看到这题, 看了许多NN的讨论,也查了许多资料,终于有以下理解:

1.  in order that 表目的, 必须有情态动词

OG171说Although E uses an appropriate conjunction, in order that,
   the verb form would marry is unidiomatic and illogical (might marry would be better),意思是说, in order that可以用, 但后面应该有情态动词, 否则就是unidiomatic and illogical .

OG67的C是:   ...in order that they, 也是用了in order that 但没有情态动词,所以也不正确.  注意OG是说in order that they不正确, 而不是说in order that不正确哟.

2.  so that可表1)目的,2)结果.   表目的时与in order that用法相同,但情态动词不是必须的, 且in order that更正式. 两者的用法较灵活,可以满足不同逻辑主语及时态变换.

3.  so as to的用法比较严格,要求 1)逻辑主语与主语一致,2)前面是简单的主谓结构,即只有主语一个名词,无其他成分的名词与主语竞争so as to的逻辑主语. 3)时态简单,不须用完成时或将来时.   OG171的A 满足了第一个条件,但不满足第2个条件:前面有2个名词可以作为逻辑主语. 所以,OG说: Awkward and imprecise, A does not specify who is to marry Anne.
