看了大家的帖子才知道原来USC现在滑落的那么快啊,印象里它可一直都是TOP 20啊,唉...

A life long choise weighs far much more than $70000, so Berkeley is a better place to go , if I were in your position.

I will choose USC if it pays you money. both are traditional top 20 schools, you will see the same companies and same number of openings at both school. If you are F-1 student, job hunting will not be very easy but you should have at least three offers from either school.

The financial burden in my opinion is much bigger issue.

Absolutely true.

To a Chinese student, there's no door that USC can't let you in but Hass can let you in.

Once you get into the door for interview, the rest is up to yourself.

Although I'm a big chaser of ranking and reputation, and if I decide to go to Berkeley I would love to see you in Haas, I have to say this is a tough choice for you.  My advice is to go back to visit your career plan and preferred working location after the school.  In Southern California, USC might slightly have bigger name because of its huge alumni network there.  In California, USC and Berkeley probably are pretty much the same, reputation wise, I'm pretty sure companies recruit in Berkeley will also do that in USC, they won't give you preference just because you are in Berkeley.  Across the America continent, Berkeley should have a slight edge but it depends on who you are talking to.  Internationally, especially in China, Berkeley surely beat USC and people might think you are talking about University of South Carolina.  OK, back to the reality, I believe the skill you can learn from both schools are the same and most of the time the reputation thing can only carry you to the first job and after that it's all about yourself.  My point is, when so many people all talk about Berkeley's reputation, you should sit back, calm down, look back your career path and charateristics as well as personality, of course the financial situation too, then it might be easier for you to make the decision.

Declaimer: I'm in California and I never think about applying USC even though I might get scholarship too based on the information here.

Oh, my god. The difference is so huge. for example, virtually all top MC and IB visit Haas for recruitment, while virtually none of them recruit officially at Marshall (according to their placement reports). The fact that USC once was a top 20 school does not mean it is in the same league with Haas, not to mention its plummeting ranking now.

btw, this is a note written one year ago and LZ has already made his decision

Are you serious? You can easily tell the difference from their employment reports.

I'm serious.  If you take a look at the USC 2004 report, which is the latest one on their site, you will see a lot of big names recuiting there, Mckinsey, Deloitte, JP Morgan, Citigroup, P&G, Microsoft, Guidant, HP, Amgen, Agilent.......

Again, I always think as long as the recruiters come to the campus, the school's work is done, it's your job to get a position out of it.
