[SC总结] 比较结构中的代词选择及为谓语动词补出

感谢版主的辛勤工作。对于第一种比较,本人再举两个例子表示支持:

OG251. The gyrfalcon, an Arctic bird of prey, has survived a close brush with extinction; its numbers are now five times greater than when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970's. .

(A)  extinction; its numbers are now five times greater than

(B)  extinction; its numbers are now five times more than

(C)  extinction, their numbers now fivefold what they were

(D)  extinction, now with fivefold the numbers they had

(E)   extinction, now with numbers five times greater than

答案是A,省略了主语和谓语

OG89. A recent national study of the public schools shows that there are now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were four years ago.

(A)  there are now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were

(B)  there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were

(C)  there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were

(D)  every thirty-two pupils now have one micro­computer, four times as many than there were

(E)   every thirty-two pupils now has one microcom­puter, four times as many as

答案是C,这道题补足了动词,而且四个选项都补了were,一眼看去颇令人费解。其实这句话要表达的意思是现在公立学校计算机的普及率是每32个学生1台,现在计算机数量是四年前的四倍,既然强调计算机数量,四年前肯定不止一台计算机,所以要补were。这里谓语动词最好就要补出来。

关于第二种比较,我有个问题请教楼(版)主:

大全763.        The guiding principles of the tax plan released by the Treasury Department could have even a greater significance for the economy than the particulars of the plan.

(A) even a greater significance for the economy than

(B) a significance that is even greater for the economy than

(C) even greater significance for the economy than have

(D) even greater significance for the economy than do

(E) a significance even greater for the economy than have

答案是D,C和E补出have显然不对,D补出do能和could have 对应吗?

此外,D选现去掉了不定冠词,为什么?

leader真是问到我的伤心处啊! 在我刚出道的时候曾在版里问过极其类似的一个问题, 但最终石沉大海.

先来回答简单的问题:

1. from longman: significance是不可数的名词, 所以在它前面加不定冠词a不对.

2. B中的that is + adj.是一个不简洁结构

以上这两项错误虽然致命, 但都不能作为最后敲定答案的杀手锏

最后一个问题就是我曾经问过的, 请看OG126: OG否定CD的理由是用了do, "...the verb do suggests that the migrating pearls are presented as a real phenomenon, not as figurative illustration." ETS说do象征着真实现象, 而非比喻. 但你有没有发现主句用的谓语动词是情态动词can. 可是OG偏偏不说as后面的谓语动词形式补的不对, 而只是说意思不对. 再来看大全这道题, 同样, 后面的谓语动词一定要补, 否则会有歧义. have肯定不对, 但标准答案却是do, 对应主句里的could. 所以, 我认为, 在GMAT中, 比较结构中谓语动词的补出, 可以用do来对应情态动词.

我会留心其他的语法题目, 以便进一步印证.

还有上一次我们讨论过关于with的一个问题, 后来我又提出了新的看法. 麻烦leader斧正. 其中言语表达有些晦涩, 因为涉及一些抽象概念, 望见谅.

语法的最高境界是以不变应万变, 语法的分析不能脱离总结和综合, 否则会造成以万变应不变.

感谢版主的回答,看来OG解释我还需要反反复复看啊!到现在只看了一遍,所以126题这么重要的信息都漏掉了。不过我认为如果不上CD来讨论问题,看OG的解释提高的速度有限啊;一到CD上来讨论,才发现自己很多问题的理解要么不深入,要么不准确,甚至完全错误。难怪商学院总强调Teamwork,1+1远远大于2啊!

版主,关于第二种比较还有一个问题:

大全181. Bob Wilber became Sidney Bechet’s student and protégé when he was nineteen and, for a few years in the 1940’s, came as close to being a carbon copy of the jazz virtuoso in performance as anyone has ever come.

(A) as anyone has ever come

(B) as anyone ever had been

(C) as anyone ever had done

(D) that anyone ever did

(E) that anyone ever came

看了以前的帖子,觉得没讲清楚。GEMJ说这道题要表示“迄今为止,BW都是 …”,所以要选A。A选现为什么不用done而用come?我听石林的语法串讲说go、come、become往往表示一个动态的过程,如果出现在题干中,答案一般要保留,不知道是不是这样。此外,本题为什么用anyone,而不是anyone else。

你这个帖子已经解决我很多问题,在此向你表示衷心的感谢!不过如果还有疑问,我还会贴出来。
