Answers 1) Depends on the school. Some schools like Stanford are very very strict. They will cut off your essay after the word limit so that even if you upload it, the admissions committee will not be able to read it. However, schools like Harvard will generally allow a 20% overage. 2) It is NOT good to exceed the word limit. One of the reasons the word limit was imposed was to test to see if you are able to communicate clearly and concisely. Essentially, it is a test of your communication skills. If you go over, it generally means you were too sloppy and did not know how to edit your work. If you were under, it means you didn't fully develop your thoughts. Either way, it implies that you did not know how to pick out the important elements of what you want to write about. 3) Now always...however, you have to make it clear which essay topic it belongs to.
