我感觉答案存在问题。

白勇的黄皮书里明确说明，be able to和can不可随意替换：前者表示能力，后者表示可能性，

也充分说明情态动词不能随意添加删减或改动的说法。

所以我认为，5个答案里，只有E比较合理，虽然有点啰嗦。

我觉得不能换成can，因为题目说的是“尽管他们有能力去给grandparents买那些appliances，但是没买。”

而不是说他们可能买，也可能不买。

并且，would have done是表示“本来会。。。。”吧，又与原题中意义有冲突。

这题的考点应该是虚拟语气，demand 后面必须跟虚拟。

所以答案应该是C

这里的demanding做形容词，并不要求虚拟。

答案是C没错，我记得之前讨论过。

考点1：用would have found表示对过去的推测（也是一种虚拟），表示“本应该”；

考点2：are able to 与 afford重复，afford本身就有“能够”的含义（这一点是以前讨论贴上的nn们提出的，不确定是否一定如此） ；

考点3：E选项中“would have been a miracle to their grandparents”改变了原来从句的重心，削弱了"they"和"their grandparents"的对比意味。
