1st: territorial behavior is motivated by instinct and culture. Brief introduction of density dependent factor. Because of DDF, death and birth rates come into balance and population density levels off. In this circumstance, territorial instinct tends to evolve. Individuals who can predispose to defend resource have higher survival rate.
2nd: not every species evolves territorial instinct. Because the population density can be levelled off by predation, emigration and disease
3rd: humans are decidedly territorial. So it's best to understand how culture and instinct factor influence.
