The rapid growth of cities today is a mostly positive development for our society.
It’s not uncommon that more and more people are rushing into city since the various conveniences of transportation, education and medicine provides by the rapid growth of cities. But whether it is a mostly positive development for our society, I think, is till to discuss.
Admittedly, people have enjoyed numerous benefits from the rapid development of cities. To begin with, cities have perfect infrastructures such as convenient public transport system, high-level schooling and technologically advanced hospital. People cannot enjoy these excellent conditions in rural area. Also, fast development of cities provides more employment opportunities. The larger the city is, the more jobs it can provide, which, in turn, boosts economic development and improves peoples’ lives.
In short, the rapid urban growth plays a positive role in prompting the progress of society.
However, with the quick growth of cities, the adverse effect brought about by which are seriously threatening to human’s survivor. The number of people flooding into cities has excessively surpassed cities’ accommodation and poses a threat to limited natural resources. For example, Now Beijing’s resident population is over 20 million, and is still increasing. The water pollution and water scarcity resulted by which is increasing prominent, so does the exhaust fumes, haze, traffic jam and so on. Moreover, the substantially expanding of city has extremely deprived many species of animals and plants of their natural habitats. A surprised number of animals and plants are facing extinct due to people’s activity. For those, how can you appraise the tremendous progress brought by city development?
In conclusion, I would argue that more appropriate and strong policies should be made to keep the cities’ sustainable development. Otherwise, the negative effect generated by city development will become irreversible.
