首先，无论是1981还是1997，都是发生在过去。必定要用过去时中的某一种。Had grown表示一种动作的延续。没看题目说吗？by 1997 that figure怎么怎么样，直到1997年，也就是从1981直到1997，还是前面那个鸟东西：that figure。这是一段时间，所以用完成时，而且是过去完成时。
其次，C不对在哪儿。Whereas表比较，且引导完整的句子。GMAT中强调比较对象对等，如果句式能整齐对称则锦上添花。本句虽说whereas引导了完整的句子，但比较对象却不对等. Whereas a  figure of nearly six hours a week怎么怎么样是不是就好多了？还有很重要的一点，GMAT中一直是主动优于被动的，这句话可以用主动为什么要用被动？不好。
再来讲讲D，最大的问题，有歧义。先指出一点，GMAT语法考试中，任何修改包括正确选项都是在原句的基础上稍作改动的，只要与原句要表达的意思重心不符的，通通算错！为什么GWD到最后那么多争议题，很多人都是各执一词：“啊~这道题按语法现象来讲没错。”可他们有注意原句要表达的意思是什么麽？不能改重心！不能改原意！再看这句话，原句说，直到1997年怎么怎么样，而D说，with a figure …in 1997.这个97年到底是修饰figure呢？还是修饰整句话呢？看，歧义了吧。还有一点，compared with, compared to用来表比较的时候一般都放在句首。不过这句话系XDF理论，考不考虑进去楼主自己斟酌。
Ps。Gmat强调了无数次的了，修改句子首先不能有大错，例主谓不一致事态问题等等，其次是在不引发歧义的基础上尽量平行工整对称简洁。按照这几个标准加以判断语法题就迎刃而解拉~
后面几道题楼主按这种方法琢磨琢磨就明白了。
