GT: T 111(29,29,26,27), GMAT 730(Q50,V40, AWA4 , IR5)

Essay/Statement: Career Goal, Leadership, Excurricular Activities, Optional Essay

CMU Heinz MSIM one-year track
Syracuse雪城 MISM executive track (one year)
U of Maryland-College Park MSB IS (one year)

Kellogg one-year MBA - 要busiess related ungraduate degree,没投
Cornell Johnson one-year MBA - 要advanced (master) degree,  没投
USC IBEAR one-year MBA -
Rochester Simon one-year MBA -
University of Florida one-year MBA -

CMU Heinz MSIM one-year track
Syracuse雪城 MISM executive track (one year)
U of Maryland-College Park MSB IS (one year)

Pepperdine
Rochester
USC IBEAR

Jon,
Thank you for your kind words and suggestions.

Although my current position is operations manager and I do manage a  pool of consultants, I stll engage in many hands-on work and generate substantial amount of billable hours. I would say my role is simliar to those law firm partners who need to manage a team but also need to go to courts. I feel my root is in IT consulting and don't see myself as a pure "behind-the-desk people manager" in the near future, especially if I'm going to work in th U.S.. That's the reason why I'm reluctant to choose MBA programs.

Having said that,  I do understand that attending MBA program doesn't necessarily mean I will have to become a general manager after graduation. Nor does it mean I will need to ditch my entire IT related experience. I feel that big part of the reason why I choose MIS programs over MBA ones is that I want to get a degree as easy and  soon as possible.

So my conclusion based on your answers and my line of thinking is, MBA is definately more valuable than MIS, but it surely requires more commitment and investment. The question really is, am I up for it? I guess I need to do a lot of soul searching before I can answer that question.

Your suggestions on one-year MBA and EMBA are quite valuable to me. It is clear that I should diffrentiate myself from younger crowds. Otherwise my age and experience will only be a drawback for me. And this applies to MIS programs too. The option of one-year program in Cornell is especially good  because my potential client, if I decided to take up on my boss' offer, is located in Corning/Elmira area which is 1 hour drive away from Ithaca.   The question again is , am I willing to commit to that and will I be admitted.

As for the mentioning of immigration intention and boss' offer, you are right and I shouldn't put any emphasis on them.

Last, thanks for boost my confidence on the subject of GPA

Its great to read your long and honest answer,
Now I don't want to push you towards an MBA if this is not your dream nor where your strengths lie, I just wanted to open up some more possibilities to you. If your strengths are technical, and this is what you wish, then yes, an MIS program will probably make more sense for you. And I think even in an MIS program you will have to work hard! (Even if you might be a bit more comfortable with the challenges). The thing is to think about not necessarily aiming for what others tell you is more “prestigious”. Its nonsense that an MBA is more prestigious than a good MIS. You need to simply figure out what will get you best doing what you want. i.e. How to reach YOUR goals. Now, its entirely possible, that you have goals that could be well served by EITHER an MIS OR an MBA. I’ve had such clients in the past, and if that is your case, then you can apply to a mix of appropriate programs. So for example in your case, maybe a 2 year MBA doesn't make sense because of time and commitment and anyways its not really what you want, but as you have pointed out the accelerated Johnson MBA might be perfect, in which case you could apply to it simultaneously as you apply to MIS programs.

Lots of lovely options here!

Very good questions cause they are very specific! So lets start off from the beginning. I think that with your experience and your GMAT you can probably also have a shot at getting into a better school than those you listed, although they are great programs too. If you are focusing on one year programs, and are also consider MBA programs, anyway because of your age and family reasons etc. (which I totally understand) then I would definitely add Johnson and Kellogg to your list.
http://www.johnson.cornell.edu/Academic-Programs/Full-Time-MBA/Accelerated-MBA.aspx
http://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/programs/fulltimemba/mba_programs/1_year_program.aspx

And no you don't need a specific MBA in IT consulting. In general just a good solid MBA will help you get where you want to go. Of course the coursework will be less tech oriented than an MIS program, so you have decide if you are better at and more interested in the tech side of things, or you want to do the softer “people management” stuff. As for your immigrant idea and your boss’ offer, I don't think you need to mention it. All the schools know that many students apply to professional masters in order to move to the US. So you will get no advantage from mentioning it. And maybe the schools will even wonder: Well if he only wants the degree to be able to work in the US then why didn't he take his boss’ offer? And then you have to start explaining.

And actually an EMBA can be a nice compromise if you want between your boss’ offer and your move to the US. Because most EMBA programs are designed for older students such as yourself who would be working at the same time as they study, and then if you wanted to move on later, you could do so, because you would already be on American ground.

Finally, regarding your GPA. Its not the best that's true, but it doesn't “kill your application” or anything like that. Especially since it was sooo long ago and you have done sooo many things since. If you can show that you have been successful in the meanwhile, it should count less than for a candidate who is only 2 years out of college.

I hope this answer was as helpful as it was long

Years of professional experience.
A minimum of six years is necessary to be considered for the experience waiver. In some cases more than six years experience may be necessary to demonstrate the qualifications required for admission to the executive IM track.

Appropriate job responsibilities.
The applicant's professional experience must be in one or more domains that are central to the IM field. (Examples are application development, database management, information security, network management, system integration, systems analysis, business process analysis, enterprise architecture, software engineering. Note that this list is not exhaustive.)

Continually increasing responsibility.
The candidate must be able to demonstrate that his or her career shows a steady progression through increasingly responsible positions.

Recommendation by employer.
The candidate's application should be accompanied by a strong recommendation letter from at least one current or previous supervisor or manager. This allows the candidate to show an independent assessment of his or her professional expertise
