In the memo, the recommondation endorsed in the argument is that Dura-Sock Inc should discontinue its use of the Edure manufacturing process. To support it, the vice president cites the result of a recent study that its average old customer pruchases new socks of its company every three months.Meanwhile, the arguer cites the survey conducted in northeastern United States cities that the most valuable feature of its products is stylish appearance and availability in disparate colors. The recommendation appears to be somewhat reasonable at first glance.Nevertheless,a close scrutiny of the argument reveals that it is unconvincing due to the following unsubstantiated assumptions in the reasoning line.
The threshold problem with the argument is that the arguer too hastly assumes that the evidence of every-three-month repurchase of its socks means that the old ones are discared. It is entirely possible that these customers merely try to wear the latest style while still use their old ones, insomuch as we have been informed of the avalability of its socks with disparate colors and styles.Or perhaps in the aftermath of several months wearing ,the socks give out such awful smell that customer have to purchase new ones.Without ruling out these possibility, the assumption is indefensible.
In the second place, the recommendation is based on an poor assumption that the results of the survey conducted in the northeastern American cities can be applied equally to other parts of the country.Common sense tells us that people living in this area are better off than other areas. Thus, the respondents are concerned less about the costs of purchasing new socks every three months than about the stylish appearance and availability of various colors. This scenario ,if ture ,will cast doubt on the arguer's assumption that its socks' durability is not the most attracting feature to all its customers .
Finally, before I come to my concltsion,it is necessary to point out another flaws in the argument. The arguer assumes that this measure can makes profits. If the assumptions mentioned above were proved false, the method of discontinuing use of the endure manufacturing process would lead to shrinkage of its market in the end.A large number of patrons may express their displeasure by refusing to purchase products made by Dura-Sock Inc.Therefore, failing to provide substantiated evidences that they will not lose its patrons, the recommendation in the argument is unpersuasive. To sum up,the argument rests on a series of poor assumptions ,which therefore render its recommendation unconvincing. To bolster it ,the vice president should ,of course, show us whether its customers will discard or disuse the old socks after repurchase.Meanwhile, the arguer should provide us clear evidence that the survey in its largest market can be applied well in other parts of the country. Finally, the arguer should testify whether the company will make a profit by taking this measures. |
