146) The best test of an argument is the argument's ability to convince someone with an opposing viewpoint. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
The issue concerning that the best test of an argument is the argument's ability to convince someone with an opposing viewpoint is to some extent reasonable since thus we can draw a conclusion that is important to make some significant decision. However, sometimes there are more valuable asset in the arguing progress.
An old saying goes, "it is more horrible to be numb in mind than physical death." Arguing can motivate people's vigor in mind, from this aspect, weather there is a conclusion in the end is not so important and what the significant effect of arguing should be its encouragement for people's thinking. In the arguing progress, people can get together to change with their opinions, learning to view things from different aspects, thus will be beneficial to accept the new things.
In educational field, as a mean of education, argument has positive effect on students' ability to express and to practice logical thinking. From political aspect, argument is an indispensable part of democracy. Argument is a form of freedom of speech and is beneficial for social progress.
In fact, sometimes it is not important to get a conclusion from an argument since there are different results from different views, thus it may be meaningless to convince someone with an opposing viewpoint. For instance, an argument concerning which is more important between the progress and the result. Someone believes that the progress is more important since we can learn a lot in the progress. However, for some other people, the result relates to whether their effort in the progress is meaningful, thus arguing that the result is more important. Actually, from different views, both sides are reasonable and there's no necessary to draw a conclusion.
Admittedly, sometimes an argument is concerning something about the truth which involves one's own standard to judge what is right and what is wrong, at this time, the best test may be the argument's ability to convince someone with an opposing viewpoint. Since by convincing someone with an opposing viewpoint we can draw a conclusion to make sure the standard which is critical for us to make right decisions. For example, at the end of 19 centry, with the tide of capitalism, some reformers argued for launching political reform to carry out some policies about capitalism. At that time, only if those reformers convinced people who hold opposing viewpoint through an argument, the political reform that they put up with could be launched.
In conclusion, the surest test of an argument should be argument's ability to motivate people's thinking and what is the best test of an argument should be decided by the property of the argument.
