Guidebook writer: I have visited hotels throughout the country and have noticed that in those built before 1930 the quality of the original carpentry work is generally superior to that in hotels built afterward. Clearly carpenters working on hotels before 1930 typically worked with more skill, care, and effort than carpenters who have worked on hotels built subsequently.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the guidebook writer's argument?

正确答案: D

此题答案选D,但是我并不觉得其是最佳答案啊,我自己选的是B。不知道有没有高人能够讲D解释地通!
Q14:
Guidebook writer:  I have visited hotels throughout the countryand have noticed that in those built before 1930 the quality of the originalcarpentry work is generally superior to that in hotels built afterward.  Clearly carpenters working on hotels before1930 typically worked with more skill, care, and effort than carpenters whohave worked on hotels built subsequently.

Which of the following, if true, mostseriously weakens the guidebook writer’s argument?

  1. The quality of original carpentry in hotels is generally far     superior to the quality of original carpentry in other structures, such as     houses and stores.
  2. Hotels built since 1930 can generally accommodate more guests     than those built before 1930.
  3. The materials available to carpenters working before 1930 were     not significantly different in quality from the materials available to     carpenters working after 1930.
  4. The better the quality of original carpentry in a building, the     less likely that building is to fall into disuse and be demolished.
  5. The average length of apprenticeship for carpenters has     declined significantly since 1930.

为了capacity 而牺牲了quality??

The passage has not talked about this.  You cannot inject your own thoughts into the passage.  As far as we know, capacity has nothing to do with qualify (according to the passage and/or choice B).

B) is wrong because the argument is about the quality of the carpentry work, not the capacity of the accomodation.

D) simply points out that whateve building left standing HAD better quality of orginal carpentry to begin with. It is similar to the evolution theory: ONLY the better or the best would survive. Thus, you cannot judge the quality of originals based on the leftovers. The leftovers are not representative of the original.
