UCLA Finance Ph.D. Program Ranked #1 in the World
A recently published article, using sophisticated statistical methods, ranked the UCLA Finance Ph.D. Program #1 in the world. The article looks at the joint contribution of the university granting the Ph.D. degree and the institution one is placed at as an assistant professor. The 2009 article from The Financial Review, published by Kam Chan, Carl Chen, and Hung Fung, is entitled, "edigree or Placement? An Analysis of Research Productivity in Finance." The research study ranks the UCLA Finance Ph.D. Program as #1 at enhancing the publication record of its students in the top three finance journals. The study also notes the top five universities for an assistant professorship in finance (which includes UCLA). Approximately ten percent of UCLA finance Ph.D. graduates have ended up at these top five universities and an even greater percentage received offers from them.

Finance addresses the ways in which individuals, business entities and other organizations allocate resources over time. An applied branch of economics dealing with the problems of allocating financial resources, with particular attention given to the art of decision making under conditions of uncertainty, finance is closely allied with the liability side of an organization's balance sheet.

At UCLA Anderson, a specialization in Finance includes an examination of the funding markets and processes for financing enterprises, as well as the effects of prices and interest rates on assets and liabilities.

The UCLA Anderson faculty includes three former presidents of the American Finance Association: Eduardo Schwartz (California Professor of Real Estate), Michael Brennan (Emeritus, Irwin and Goldyne Hearsh Chair in Banking and Finance), Richard Roll (Japan Alumni Chair in Finance).

To locate faculty with expertise in specific topics see the Faculty Expertise Guide.

Hello my friend.  No, I would not say that you are right here.    Now, remember we tell all our client to simply GO TO THE BEST SCHOOL YOU GET INTO!  So if you get into HBS, for example, you would NEVER choose CBS or Wharton over HBS.  Now, all that being said, there are other Finance programs out there that are BETTER than the ones you’ve listed.  For example, Stern and Stanford (according to many rankings) are known to be BETTER in finance than CBS.  Sure CBS has Wall Street connections, but if I were in your shoes, from a purely finance perspective, Id add Stern and Stanford to the list.  And of course, if you go to HBS, you should go there.   Then again, I am a bit biased…

This is a survey on 2,000 banking professionals, so this should reflects more accruately which school is considered better in the banking world.

Top Business Schools for Employability in Banking Nationally

1. Columba Business School
2. New York University, Stern School of Business
3. University of Chicago, Booth School of Business
4. Harvard Business School
5. University of Pennsylvania, The Wharton School
6. Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management
7. Georgetown University, McDonough School of Business
8. Dartmouth College, Tuck School of Business
8. University of Michigan, Ross School of Business
10. Emory University, Goizueta Business School

New York City is the home of investment banking and most other financial services, so it should come as no surprise that it’s the home of the best business schools for employability in banking. Columbia Business School and NYU Stern School of Business are No. 1 and No. 2 in New York City, as well as in the Northeast and nationally. NYU Stern even scores the No. 1 spot in San Francisco and No. 3 in the West. Columbia also makes it into the Top 5 in the Midwest and Southeast.

Given the ranking, you still won't choose 6/7/8/9/10 over Stanford or MIT if you wish to break into IBD, right?
