因为1. 第一段说的是Hopis社会很稳定，就算是在人口下降和外界接触的压力下。 2. 第二段开头说（普遍认为的，从has been能看出来）：能保持这种独特的社会文化系统，是由于宗教精英的努力和地理隔绝。是这两点导致了社会稳定，社会稳定呢，又在人口下降和外界接触的环境下，显得很不可思议，社会竟然没动荡还很稳定。所以“人口下降”和社会文化没有半毛钱关系。

IMO the ans is C, and here is my try.

C表达上没有错误，但是infer的意义又在哪里呢？完全是重复原文再加废话 (not eliminate)。推测题，我认为，思路应该发散开去但又不能走太远。第一段提到  diminution in population and pressure from contact with outside groups，第二段提到limited both cultural contact and exposure to European diseases. 这里并不是去证明必然有因果，只要猜想似乎合理就足够了。

这种限制只是一个事实，限制了和外界文化的接触也限制了暴露在欧洲疾病中，当然限制的潜台词就是没有完全eliminate
A选项是一个结果，没有人口急剧减少，而且是prevent from这种很猛的词，这显然不是单纯的limit就能infer的出的，你还需要考虑其他因素，比如内部是不是有瘟疫，饥荒或者漏网的exposure是不是很致命，选了这个选项的（包括我）都有了一个assumption，就是diminution in population是由exposure to European diseases引起的，这显然是没有根据的
C选项就是说limited but did not eliminate这种接触，首先挑不出知名缺陷，其次姑且就把did not eliminate看成infer吧
结论，尽量不要联想太多，尤其是文章比较懂得情况下
