In @ UCLA from R2 WL, 并求选校 Anderson VS Darden w/ $

被放到WL之后就没抱太大的希望。13号早上收到email，说decision available，我还以为是终于把我拒了。结果居然是congratulations。

现在犹豫应该选Anderson还是Darden。我毕业想做corporate finance，我的background是美国big four audit。毕业想留美国。Darden R1 录取，有三分之一学费的奖学金，还有in-state tuition，因为我在Virginia住了四年。一共大概是$40K左右。deposit和房子的deposit都交了，不过这和奖学金来比都是小数目。

犹豫的原因：第一，Darden这边，在DC的就业机会很少了，因为大多数公司都和政府有关，都不能招外国人。我在big four做audit，我们office都不招international了。LA那边身份限制相对比较少。第二，Darden这边local的就业机会比较少，大城市毕竟机会多。第三，UCLA应该是LA地区第一的学校了吧，整个加州更好的学校也不多。东岸这边竞争非常强。第四，Darden非常非常忙，课业负担重，之前的学长学姐反映对找工作多少有影响。第五，非常喜欢LA，和整个加州in general。

Darden的优势：第一，成本对我比较低，生活成本比LA低，我从东岸搬到西岸的成本也很高；第二，环境熟悉，因为我在UVa念的master；第三，听说校友非常帮忙；第四，排名比Anderson高。

对于Anderson的concern：第一，加州的经济仍然不太好，会不会影响在美国的就业，因为就业主要只能在加州，在东岸的机会就不大了。当然，从东岸到西岸的机会也非常小；第二，因为加州外国人多，尤其亚洲人多，作为亚洲人，就业竞争会不会比东岸强

我很喜欢西岸，如果没有成本和就业的concern，我会choose Anderson in a heartbeat。但是现实没有这么简单。

写得不是很有逻辑，因为现在脑子很乱。希望大家帮忙提建议，或者提一些我没有想到的因素。另外，哪位知道Anderson今年中国学生的full-time offer情况吗？我也会继续在CD上找一下。谢谢。

再投一票UCLA。他们Finance很强的。在SoCal area就业竞争实力也强。我老公是Anderson的，所以也顶一下。 （声明，我是USC的！！！不过不是Marshall的）

UCLA Finance Ph.D. Program Ranked #1 in the World
A recently published article, using sophisticated statistical methods, ranked the UCLA Finance Ph.D. Program #1 in the world. The article looks at the joint contribution of the university granting the Ph.D. degree and the institution one is placed at as an assistant professor. The 2009 article from The Financial Review, published by Kam Chan, Carl Chen, and Hung Fung, is entitled, "edigree or Placement? An Analysis of Research Productivity in Finance." The research study ranks the UCLA Finance Ph.D. Program as #1 at enhancing the publication record of its students in the top three finance journals. The study also notes the top five universities for an assistant professorship in finance (which includes UCLA). 呵呵，我也忍不住想给楼主一点意见了。。我和你背景类似，也在va生活了3+年，都面了uva和ucla ，不知道你亲自去ucla了没有，我去了ucla以后心情十分舒畅，感觉比dc好太多了，里面的学生非常热情，整个一个爽。。假如我没有沃顿和cornell的offer, 我应该会选择去ucla。
我觉得你很清楚自己想要什么，我总结出来的what you want is：留在美国+换个生活环境+做finance.  如果你喜欢la, 以后想在那生活，go with it.   名次相差一点不算什么，钱没了可以再挣，listen to your heart and pursue your true happiness

vote for darden! I THINK darden has a better reputation than anderson, maybe because of it's rigorous academic training

Really? Darden has a better reputation? Although maybe not many people know Anderson, I think a lot more people know UCLA. Darden is indeed very rigorous. It may be recognized by employers, but the downside is less time to prepare for interviews and to search for job information.  On the contrary, Anderson is reducing one core course to give students more time to look for an internship.

The underlying reason why Anderson cuts one core course MAY BE it had difficulties in placing its graduates. I said MAY BE. Given the nature of business school, Darden is quite impossible to jeopardize its own placement and reputation just for the sake of its case method.


From CD you probably can tell Darden students found better jobs. In terms of location, that's another story.

又吓唬人家了吧。小心lz被你吓跑。你如果说LA是帅哥之都，她就去了。
反过来，如果告诉lz，UCLA，USC多年来都是中国mm更多，LA的美女比DC多，她就不去了。

通过跟两边的学长聊，感觉好像找工作问题都不大。不过现在confirm了Darden这边毕业前都解决了工作问题，但是UCLA那边好像不确定，让我有点担心。Anderson Class 11好像稍微有一些问题，因为很多intern都是在国内做的。但是他们Class 12好像想在美国做intern的，都能在美国做。这样的话，Class 12可能留美，或最后找full-time问题不大。


不知道前面帮我回帖的有没有Anderson的学长，学姐，还有同届的同学，因为我认不出你们的ID。Darden这边的两位学长和同届的同学都出来帮我出主意了，真的让我很感动。如果有我没认出ID的学长学姐，抱歉。

我想再说一次，不管我最后怎样选，会不会成为double Hoo，我这辈子都是Hoos。UVa is blood in my vein.

Darden读书怎么可能来加州上班, 可能性很小吧, 如果你想来加州, 你又不是这里长大的,干嘛留在VA读书, 奇怪伐) 比如我们公司(小公司)只招加州学校毕业的, (除非你内部认识人推荐,不过没有校友顶你, 进来的机会实在是小). 另外毕业几年以后,已经对于在国外还要做投行,咨询这种的热情大减, 一个人在外每天做到半夜,或者半夜起来上班,吃力哇? 面试了很多top tier 的这种professional service做了想跳回corp的, 大部分都是想要好一些的lifestyle.  (另外,微软,amazon这些公司都在华盛顿州把,又不在加州咯)

支持楼主去Anderson. 其实从LZ的话语中，已经看出对LA的倾向性了。读一个自己喜欢的学校，拥有喜欢的环境，是很重要的。Darden有奖学金不假，可是如果能在西岸找到如意郎君，那点儿钱又算啥呢？

钱是个很重要的因素，但是mba本来就是a game...真的在乎那几万块，应该reconsider是不是要读mba, 而不是说应该省多少钱如果选了给奖的program~

选不同的学校，以后的人生轨迹很有可能彻底不同，所以考虑到long-term impact, 还是不要从钱出发来思考问题，这样可能更容易一点吧～
