Electronic computer chips made of tiny silicon wafers now regularly contain millions of electronic switches. Unfortunately, electronic switches that are this small cannot withstand intense radiation. Micro-Mechanics plans to produce a chip that, because it uses only microscopic mechanical switches, will be invulnerable to radiation damage. The switches will, however, be slower than electronic switches and the chip will contain only 12,000 switches.

For there to be a market for Micro-Mechanics' chip as a result of the apparent advantage described above, each of the following would have to be true EXCEPT:

2. GWD-27-Q2:

Electronic computer chips made of tiny silicon wafers now regularly contain millions of electronic switches.Unfortunately, electronic switches that are this small cannot withstand intense radiation.Micro-Mechanics plans to produce a chip that, because it uses only microscopic mechanical switches, will be invulnerable to radiation damage. The switches will, however, be slower than electronic switches and the chip will contain only 12,000 switches.

For there to be a market for Micro-Mechanics’ chip as a result of the apparent advantage described above, each of the following would have to be true EXCEPT:

  1. There will be applications in which the speed attainable by an electronic switch is not essential.

  2. Switches used on electronic chips that contain only 12,000 switches are more vulnerable to radiation damage than the switches on Micro-Mechanics’ chip will be.

  3. There will be applications for computer chips in environments where the chips may have to survive intense radiation.

  4. Some devices in which computer chips will be used will have other components that will be able to function during or after exposure to radiation.

  5. Manufacturers are able to protect electronic computer chips against exposure to intense radiation, where this protection is necessary.(答案)

把这种方法应用到本题,依次对五个选项进行否定,可以看出A、B、C、D都会因为这个否定而使得原文的结论(there to be a market for MM's chip because of this advantage)不成立,所以A、B、C、D都是must be true的,只有选E。

The reason that the manufacturer wants to replace the electronic chips is because the electronic chips cannot withstand radiation. If the manufacturer figured out a way to shield the electronic chips from the intense radiation, it would not be necessary for the manufacturer to find a replacement for the electronic chip. It makes perfect sense based on the stimulus. Thus, E weakens the proposal to develop the new mechanical chip.

The stimulus mentions "withstand intense radiation." Therefore intense radiation is within the scope of the argument.

1.There will be applications in which the speed attainable by an electronic switch is not essential.

2.Switches used on electronic chips that contain only 12,000 switches are more vulnerable to radiation damage than the switches on Micro-Mechanics’ chip will be.

3.There will be applications for computer chips in environments where the chips may have to survive intense radiation.

4.Some devices in which computer chips will be used will have other components that will be able to function during or after exposure to radiation.

5.Manufacturers are able to protect electronic computer chips against exposure to intense radiation, where this protection is necessary.(答案)

each of the following would have to be true EXCEPT means 4 answers are MUST BE TRUE answers while the fifth answer is either must be false or could be false.

In nowhere of the stimulus can you find support for answer choice E. Then E could be false, thus the correct answer in this case.

E completely removes radiation as a threat to chips. Thus it removes the need and the advantage to have the new chip.
