Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
The speaker emphasizes importance of imagination more than knowledge in most professions and academic fields. Admittedly, imagination is superior to knowledge in many fields, such as art, science of creating airplane. However, we may not easily say that imagination is more important than knowledge in most fields, because they rely on each other to some extent.
In many fields, it is true that imagination is a factor which would decide the quality and value of a work created by people. Take arts for example, many artists win high social and academic status because of the achievements he or she accomplished and the value created to society. Leonardo da Vinci, a great artist, has created the picture which depicted the mysterious smile of Mona Lisa. The imagination may lead him to accomplish this masterpiece. And when it comes to airplane, without imagination, human could not invent airplane to enjoy the space. Therefore, imagination is important in some professions and academic fields.
Although, imagination is important in many fields, does it mean that knowledge is not so significant? The answer may be negative. From the example mentioned above, Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece depicted a beautiful woman, but if he doesn’t have some basic skill of paint, which derived from the knowledge of art, his masterpiece may be not so charming and attracting to those dilettantes. And if all human own is just an illusion of flying in the sky, may not airplane would be created. Thus, knowledge could be thought as important as imagination in many professions and academic fields.
What's more, in some situation, imagination comes from pragmatic experience of using knowledge. For example, found some fallacies of Newton’s theories during using and pondering them, Albert Einstein creates theory of relativity and other theories by standing on the shoulders of giants----Newton and other precedent scientists,. Without knowledge, Einstein's imagination may not be fly in the sky of science, and without imagination, theory of relativity may not be created by him. Thus, knowledge and imagination are inmate friends could not departed from each other. Both of them are significant in most fields.
To sum up, maybe we could not easily say that imagination is better than knowledge. They may be both significant to some extent, it’s better for us to strike a balance when appraising their significance. |
