For 2017-2018, the following two essays are required of all applicants:

• Kellogg’s purpose is to educate, equip & inspire brave leaders who create lasting value.  Tell us about a time you have demonstrated leadership and created lasting value.  What challenges did you face, and what did you learn? (450 words)
• Pursuing an MBA is a catalyst for personal and professional growth. How have you grown in the past? How do you intend to grow at Kellogg? (450 words)
  

Certain applicants will respond to additional questions:

• Dual-degree applicants: For applicants to the MMM or JD-MBA dual degree programs, please explain why that program is right for you. (250 words)
• Re-applicants: Since your previous application, what steps have you taken to strengthen your candidacy? (250 word limit)

Kellogg是我个人非常喜爱的商学院，很大一部分原因是它在我入行初期就帮我塑造了高级的多元化的录取审美。一些我很看好的学生，也许不符合传统意义上的“优秀”标准（例如名校名企高分），但他们有内涵、有故事、有独特的经历，最终都归属在紫校门下。后来去campus visit，又真实地被密歇根湖边美丽的校园景色震撼了。今年初，MBA学生已经搬进高大上的新教学楼，读书体验大幅度upgrade。

Essay 1 [alwayshide]是Kellogg经久不衰的Leadership话题，已经至少沿用了7年。Leadership的定义各种各样，但Kellogg最value的应该是collaborative leadership。看看往年的题目便一目了然：Leadership and teamwork are integral parts of the Kellogg experience. Leadership requires an ability to collaborate with and motivate others. 也就是说，这里你需要讲的不是一个task-focused的故事，而是people-focused的故事。比如你负责一个项目，团队里大部分人都比你senior，你如何让他们心甘情愿地配合你听你指挥？又比如你想要推行一个新锐的改革，你如何力排重难说服他人一起来实现它？我认为这些过程就像谈判，生硬地强调自己实际上并不存在的威严通常只会带来负面效果，化解矛盾的关键是shut down your ego，真诚地去理解和满足对方的interests（aka“扎心”），从而connect to people on a personal and emotional level。从具体操作层面来讲，需要把看似单一的争论点分解成多个部分（比如对一份工作的满意度，除了薪水，还有自主性、创新空间，以及工作内容和价值观的匹配等等）。关于说服、改变、影响他人，我的读书笔记里有很多很有智慧的点子，比如主动暴露自己的不足、用看似powerless的沟通方法来打消疑虑获得信任，来自顶尖商学院教授的科研成果，大家可以参考。

自从Kellogg的Slogan换成“Inspiring Growth”之后，Essay 2 这道题就一直保留着。那么什么是Growth？在Kellogg老教学楼Jocab Center的一面墙上有战略学教授Benjamin Jones的解读：Growth is the greatest leadership challenge. You have to think strategically to determine the right direction for growth, think operationally and financially to meet your growth target, and think organizationally to understand your internal capabilities and how to preserve key aspects of your culture. 虽然这个说的是business领域里的概念，对申请人理解自己的career path也有借鉴意义。也就是说，你的growth应该是一个全面考虑的intentional的行为结果，回过头去看一路走来的历程，每一步都环环相扣有意义。Professional wise，你的职责范围expand了，能胜任越来越有挑战性的工作；personal wise，你的技能提升了，比如从前只负责execution，后来懂得take initiative，比如从前事无巨细什么都要亲自把关，现在懂得empower others。剥开growth的外衣，这篇文章的内核仍然是经典的career goal+ why school。[/alwayshide]
