"Often researchers restrict study participation to patients who have no
ailments besides those being studied."

So does any one know how to interpret this sentence? Does it mean that often patients who have ailments are excluded from the study?

I appreciate it if someone can help.

Thanks for replying. Is it saying that as long as the patient has ailment, being studied or not, he/ she won't be allowed to participate?

It is saying that all those patients enrolled have one ailment ONLY, the one that the study focused on.
