TOFEL INDEPENDENT READING

The Attraction of Dangerous Activity

People seem to possess an innate interest in dangerous activities, extrapolating from the fact that traditional sports like basketball, badminton or table tennis is gradually losing its appeal to the growing young generation as novel choices like skydiving and scuba diving emerge. What’s More, Hollywood blockbusters, namely Star Wars, Indiana Jones, give us the impression that risky actions amount to audience in abundance. I believe this apparent tendency is a result of our incessant curiosity of the world, our never-fading desire to challenge our limits and our eternal pursuit of perfection.

First and foremost, each individual is armed with a inquisitive mind, that means, we all have question marks hanging in our head about what's going to happen if i drive the car to its limits or how does it feel to jump off a steep cliff. To answer these questions, some decided to find out in movies and others resolved to try these activities personally. Take bungee jumping for example, my dad once went on one simply because he want to experience what is it like to lose Control of your body, to feel the adrenalin rushing in your blood. In a word, curiosity drives us to participate in unsafe activities.

In addition to the allure of the unknown, pursuit in the goal of "higher, faster and stronger" also facilitate the rising popularity of extreme activities. For instance, athletes account for a disproportionate part of the participants in areas like high jumping, gymnastics and, undoubtedly, extreme sports. They are the pioneers in capitalizing physical potentials of human beings. By breaking speed records, performing astonishing feats or exerting tremendous amount of energy without a break, athletes endeavor to transcend their previous limits and push their boundaries one step further.

To summarize, dangerous activities capture our heart in that it can provide us with excitement, novelty and gratifies our longing for knowledge of the unknown. Besides, via perilous trainings or practices, people pave the way for future breakthroughs in their seeking of improvement and perfection.
