Like other children, I was always looking forward to be able to go back to the ancient times in my childhood because of the curiosity for the past. Since history tells people a lot about the past and a large number of historical figures and their stories, such a dream, going back to meet these famous persons, is becoming stronger and stronger. There are many famous people in Chinese history, and I choose to meet a famous diplomat in Han Dynasty -Zhang Qian.

Zhang Qian is beloved by history for his contributions to diplomacy between China and other countries. He spent thirteen years abroad visiting foreign countries to the west of China, addressing the policies of Han Dynasty, introducing Chinese culture to foreigners, and sending them precious goods from China, such as delicate silky textile and other utensils. Also, he went back after years of hard trip with abundant knowledge about foreign countries, including their cultures, customs, specialities and so forth, making Chinese know more about their neighborhood. His prodigious contributions led to the familiarity between China and her neighbors, and increased communications on both sides. Most obviously, the ‘Silk Way’ Road created after his trip was prosperous for thousands of years and promoted the trade between eastern and western countries.

Besides, Zhang Qian is also respected for his perseverance. During his thirteen-year trip, Zhang Qian was imprisoned in desert by enemy state for nearly ten years mainly because of the war between this country and Han Dynasty at the time. The foes made effort to let him abandon his aim to visit foreign countries both by luring him with wealth and by deterrent, but Zhang Qian never gave up. Living a tough life in the desert, he always missed his country and thought of his embassage. After ten- year difficult life, he eventually took chance to escape from there and continued his trip. When he went back with ragged clothes and aged face, the whole city acclaimed him with respects.

If Zhang Qian was living in modern society, he would be amazed by this open world and the close relationship among nations. However, he is always a model for us because of his prodigious contributions and persevering personality. I would like to meet him to share his experiences and get inspired by his great deeds.
