Paleontologist: About 2.8 million years ago, many species that lived near the ocean floor suffered substantial population declines. These declines coincided with the onset of an ice age. The notion that cold killed those bottom0dwelling creatures outright is misguided, however; temperatures near the ocean floor would have changed very little. Neverthe less, the cold probably did cause the population declines, though indirectly. Many bottom-dwellers depended for food on plankton, small organisms that lived close to the surface and sank to the bottom when they died. Most probably, the plankton suffered a severe population decline as a result of sharply lower temperatures at the surface, depriving many bottom-dwellers of food.

我理解题意是：在很久以前，许多在离海近的地方生活的species的数量大幅度下降。这种下降正好和冰河世纪来临同时发生。但是，关于寒冷把那些bottom dwelling 生物给杀了的主张是不正确的，因为洋底附近的温度没改变多少。但是，寒冷其实可能是以间接方式使得那些小生物的数量下降的。（接下来为原因）许多小生物是以plankton为食，这种plankton活的时候离海平面特近，死的时候就沉入海底。相当有可能的是，寒冷使得海平面附近的温度急剧下降，使得plankton数量大量下降，从而饿死了好多bottom-dweller。。。

我不理解，最后一句话为啥是judgement?

这道题我也做错了，仔细想了想应该是这样的：

(A) The first introduces the hypothesis proposed by the paleontologist; the second is a judgment offered in spelling out that hypothesis.

(B) The first introduces the hypothesis proposed by the paleontologist; the second is a position that the paleontologist opposes. (两个boldface都是paleontologist支持的)

(C) The first is an explanation challenged by the paleontologist; the second is an explanation proposed by the paleontologist. (两个boldface都是paleontologist支持的)

(D) The first is a judgment advanced in support of a conclusion reached by the paleontologist; the second is that conclusion. (应该相反)

(E) The first is a generalization put forward by the paleontologist; the second presents certain exceptional cases in which that generalization does not hold. (两个boldface立场一样，BF2只能说是one case, not exceptional case)

全部排除后只能选A了，我想BF2的”judgment”应该因为他有个”most probably”吧?

哪位NN能讲讲?

感觉结论句是这个吧：the cold probably did cause the population declines, though indirectly.
然后排除掉D.
