我在C,D中犹豫,但最终选了D.因为C中的确there are  出现,所以排除了.

正确答案是C.

请问,D中the number 作为4000的同位语,为什么不选啊?

不是说同位语,形式是出题机构prefer的吗?

是less 和few 的区别，

我知道 few 修饰可数名词.

less修饰不可数名词,这里less应该可以修饰number的.

所以请问,D是哪里有问题啊?

我想这里应该不存在同位语的说法, 连词but已经明示转折.  there are 在这里表示客观存在, 应该没有问题. 不知道这样解释对不对.

现在我知道,当初同位语的看法是错误的.

可是,D的错误还是不知道啊?

似乎是用big和small

amount用more和less来修饰

另外number和amount似乎有点概念的不对等

some 4,000 doesnt denote a finite number ...it is uncountable => so it is an amount ... A, B out

In OG10-39. Most archaeologists have held that people first reached the Americas less than 20,000 years ago by
crossing a land bridge into North America.....  => so "less than one quarter of some 4000 drive-ins" is a correct usage

(Besides, "a number is less than or equal to X" NOT "a number is fewer than or equal to X")

Left with CDE : C fewer than... amount => wrong ; E it => referent is unclear

one-quarter the amount感觉不对 D还不如E好呢

BUT转折 应该形成前后对比  drive-ins were 与there are

there are fewer than one-quarter of that amount                that amount=4000(我直接想成than 1000了) 用fewer比 less更恰当 

以上三点是我刚看这题(遮了答案)时的思路  本人是菜鸟 也希望有牛人指点

看了楼上的解答　觉得but前面的主干应该是some 4,000 existed in the United States 而When 引导的drive-ins were at the height of their popularity in the late 1950’s应该是某个成分（我也不知道该叫什么－－！）

另　请教楼上　the number和it　为什么不可以用it　而且it比the number更简洁
