80. Some people believe that a college or university education should be available to all students. Others believe that higher education should be available only to good students. Discuss these views. Which view do you agree with? Explain why.
The title statement is the focus nowadays and any speech about it could strike the top lines. It is a hotly debated issue in that it arouses concerns not only from ordinary people but also from the government, especially in view of rejuvenating nation through science and education. Therefore, to agree or to disagree it is a matter of balancing between its pros and cons. But if one has considered the following perspectives, he or she could only agree that higher education should be available to all students.
The most obvious reason is that to throw open the door to all kinds of students is the demands of our times. Social competition is so fierce today. We hardly image that one without any special skills can live well. As we all know, not primary schools and secondary schools but colleges and universities can provide advanced education in a systematic way. No matter whether a student is good at studying, he or she will benefit from education more or less. And it is easy to see that academic staff has been occupied with the task of supporting more competent and responsible candidates to the job market. For example, in my hometown, several colleges admit farmers, who own less capacity in studying than these straight A students, to some job-training courses. The advanced education has paved the way to increase their income and solve the problem of surplus labor in rural areas. This is a case in point.
An “ideal” view of education was dominant among pedagogues that only good students are worth to teach, because they are more likely to succeed in the future. But two crucial questions remain: what is the definite explanation of so-called good students? And what is the standard criterion? As true health is not just lack of disease, one gain great achievement is not just good at studying. Success is the result of a myriad of influences. There are a number of celebrities whose experience can bolster my point. Whinstone Churchill, who had bad mathematic perform is an example.
Last but not least, a college or university is the wonderland where students can not only obtain the knowledge, but also establish steady friendship among alumni. However, as a saying in English goes, "There are two sides to every coin." People who hold the opposite view have a point as well. Without careful planning and prudent execution, to enable all students to have access to high education may cause confusion and the daily teaching will face the possible of out of control.
In sum, the more educated and knowledgeable people, the more contributions to the development of society they will make. We must dismiss the wrong the notion that high education are available to only good students and take positive action for all students’ future. |
