38. It is primarily through our identification with social groups that we define ourselves.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
In modern society, people emphasis on "self".In order to identify yourself, or to know yourself, what should you do? There are a number ways to identify oneself. You are going to have a better view of yourself by self-analysis, by listening opinions from others, or through the society.
The best way to have a wonderful self-identification is to use a number of ways together. That is because "self" is not a flat sheet of paper, but it is so complex.
Admittedly, we are going to have a self-view through the social group.Every body play a different part in social group. And one could tell some character about oneself from the role he or she plays in the social group. For example, in a dancing group of a university, there is a leader and several group members.The leader must view herself different from other group members.She should take the responsibility of the group, so she must have a strong sense of responsibility.Since she has to teach new members how to dance, she has to have a nice dancing skill, so she can see her dancing skill is outstanding. Moreover, sometimes the dance group works with other groups. So communicate with other groups is one of the leader's duty. In those ways, the leader makes herself different from other people, since she has a stronger sense of responsibility, better dancing skill and wonderful communication skill. Her character could be told from the part she play in the social group.
However, one's role in the social group alone never helps this person have a coherent self identification.That is because a person may take part in a number of different social groups and play different parts in various groups.There could be sometime their decision is more related to the social circumstance but not their own idea. A better way to know oneself well is self-analysis.When you talk to yourself, you are going to find out what you really want and where your heart is.For example, a young man has an admire job in a famous bank and he enjoys a high salary. He has a master ability in his work and he could manage all his work in the right order.But he is not happy with his job.Because he is so busy and has less time to stay with his family.By self-analysis, the man changes his job and enjoy much leisure and could stay with his family. Thus, the role in a society sometimes could not reflect what one's real mind. By self examination, a person could find what his or her real mind.
What is more, listening to other's opinions could give you a better self view.Other people, no matter they are familiar with you, could help you make a better self identification.That is because other people have different experience and each people judge you from a different aspect.
To sum up, though we could tell some characters about ourselves by our social groups, it is never the only way to make a good self identification.Analysis yourself and listen to others people's opinions could also be helpful.We could have a better self view through a number of different ways.
