Do you agree or disagree with the following statement.
Movies and television have more negative effects than positive effects on the way young people behave.

There has always been a heated discussion over the impact of movies and televisions on young people's behaviors. Some people argue that they have more positive influence on the young, but I hold the opposite point of view.

Admittedly, there are certain kind of movies or television programs that are good for educating the young. Such programs include the cartoons watched by children, and some inspiring movies like "Forest Gum". But what I need to point out is that such kind of shows are really rare. And nowadays, even the cartoon shows are embedded with advertisement, like sugars, drinks and snacks. Children who watch these cartoon shows tend to ask their parents to buy these food for them. Also, some programs show that the character use a fancy smartphone, which raise the desire to possess one in children's mind.

Moreover, let's check what programs are usually shown on the screen. They are the kind of movies/television programs that contain violent scenes, which are improper for the young to watch. As we all know, the youth have strong inclination and impulse to try out scenes displayed on the screen. In this sense, they are easily misled by such programs. Some adolescences join gang because they think it's cool to do so. It gives them satisfaction to bully others. If we ask why do they have such ridiculous idea, it's probably that these ideas come from the movie/television programs they have seen. Also, there's more and more young people trying out drugs in that some movies display these kinds of scene, in which case the movies are to blame.

Last but not least, movies/television containing adult contents are considered improper for the young to watch, especially in Asian countries, where people tend to be more conservative. We don't want our kids to see this kind of program because we don't want our kids to be engaged in early sex behavior. This is true in my country, China. Some young people try out having intercourse due to the influence of the adult videos. As a consequences, rates that young pregnant girls abandon or abort their babies  become higher and higher. This is yet another proof that certain kinds of movies/television programs do have more negative influence on the young.

In conclusion, based on the reasons I stated above, i.e., lack of good program, fierce and violent scenes shown in the program, and adult contents in the program, I so believe that movies and televisions have more negative effective on young people's behaviors.(424 words)

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: The most important problems in today's world will be solved in our lifetime.

We always hope that the most important problems in contemporary society be solved as soon as possible. But I think these problems can hardly be solved in our lifetime.

To begin with, the war is one of the most important problems that affects nowadays society, and war is disliked by us people. Though disliked by people, war breaks out now and then in the world, which is strange enough. The Second World War was thought to be the end of all wars, but it turns out that after the Second World War, wars in small scale, say conflict or confrontation, still happen till now. The reason, I think, lies in the selfishness of human beings. Some powerful countries intrude other countries in the hope of getting the resources they need, like timber, ore, petrol or gasoline. And as I has mentioned, because humans are always selfish, I think wars will continue in the future.

Diseases are another kind of important problems that we must face with since we human started to exist in the world. Admittedly, in the past centuries, especially in recent years, we have made huge progress in medical treatment. We now live longer than we did in the past. The WHO announces that we now live on an average of 75 years. Yet situation varies between countries. People in developed countries live longer than those in developing or undeveloped countries. Also, now there still exist some deceases that are beyond our ability to cure, like AIDS and certain kind of  cancers, to cure which requires the efforts of long term research, and hence are unlikely to be solved within our lifetime.

Last but not least, pollution is yet another kind of important problems. We have seen great progress in our economy, which is achieved at the cost of the fragile environment. We all long for a better and comfortable environment to live in, so we set up international organisation to regulate the behavior of the potential polluting factories. And international cooperation is called for to settle the issue. Unfortunately, the effect seems too small, since not every countries are willing to close the factories or enterprises which, polluting as they are, earn them profits.

In conclusion, based on the above reasons, i.e., the selfishness of mankind, the contemporary restriction in treating certain kind of deceases, the unwillingness to suspend the polluting enterprise so as to improve the environment, problems like war, fatal deceases and pollution will continue to affect us as well as our children.(418 words)

Some people think university professors should spend more time doing research while others think they should spend more time educating students. What is your view?

Recently, there are many discussions about whether university professors should spend more time doing research or teaching students. Some people believe that professors should emphasize on teaching, but I hold an opposite point of view.

Admittedly, professors are responsible for giving class to students. Students learn their expertise knowledge in specific field in classes. However, as we all have experienced, professors, when giving us classes, usually cover quite a few chapters in their lecture. It's hard for us to understand and digest so much knowledge in a limited time, say three to four class sections. Consequently, we have to review the textbook after class again and again to understand the knowledge covered in professors' lectures. What I mean is that the professors merely give the outline of the expertise knowledge in classes, but what really help us to grasp that knowledge is the effort we spend after class. In this sense, I think the professors can put more energy on doing research, because we students are able to learn by ourselves, though sometimes we may need instructions from professors.

Moreover, if the professors focus on doing research and do it well, professors themselves, as well as our university, will gain reputation. As a student, I will benefit from the increased prestige of our school. For example, I will have more chance of being employed after I graduate. Also, by conducting a good research, a university can get fund from the country, and then the university can spend the money in improving the experiment facilities, which will benefit both the professors and us students. If the professors are doing really well in their research, for instance, they find the cures to some deadly deceases like AIDS and cancers, the whole country or even the whole world will get benefits.

Last but not least, in many research project, professors tend to recruit some students as assistants to conduct the experiment. Thus, us students can learn practical skills in solving problems. In this sense, professors are teaching us another kind of knowledge that is not covered in our textbook.

In conclusion, I think the professors can put more emphasis on doing research, in that we students have the ability to learn by ourselves, and the research project is beneficial to many parties, and we students can learn skills when involved in professors' research projects, too. (392 words)
