Issue: A nation should require all of its students to studythe same national curriculum until they enter college. Despite of hundreds of different civilizations, almost everysociety places importance on education, asa result, what students are learning has attracted huge attention in a society, say, from parents, educators, and even government officials, and among manyconcerns, whether a national government is necessary to enact a unifiedcurriculum for students is the bone of contention, which is complex as well ascontroversial. A national curriculum is necessary, yet a provincial supplementis of importance as well.
Educations not onlyinvolves technique skills, but also helps students better understand theculture, history, and civilization of their country. Therefore, a nationalcurriculum is consequential in terms of some national consensus. For instance, through learning history, students get a general view of their nation, learn fromthe past failures, and avoid the same mistakes when our generation is movingforward. For instance, German students learn the Nazi history when they areyoung, and the purposes of which are not only learning the history itselfexclusively, but also introspecting their history and preventing from the resuscitationof it for the Nazi almost ruined the world including Germany itself.
Moreover, with a national curriculum, studentsacross the country would arrive at the same level of ability in some subjectssuch as mathematics, writing, chemistry, and physics before they enter college, and it follows that it is convenient to make a college entrance exam if basedon this assumption. If there is no national curriculum, each province or statewill set its own curriculum respectively that are costly, then the standardsmight be quite different. When the admission committee of a university isreviewing applicants’ profiles, they are probably confused because they cannotcompare two students from different provinces. In such possible circumstances, huge financial losses are produced for maybe the college need to interpretthose different standards, and each province spends a lot on its own curriculum.
However, besides anational curriculum, a provincial supplement is indispensable for a variety ofreasons. Since different provinces have different culture, customs, evenlanguages like Quebec and Ontario, a national curriculum could not cover allthe differences, and then a detail provincial supplement can help studentsunderstand their communities, hometowns, and provinces. If young generationdoes not understand their local culture, does not speak vernacular, and doesnot familiar with the local customs, then all people are assimilated to thesame. That is provincial curricula will be conductive to maintain the diversityof a nation, which is a treasure of a country.
A nationalcurriculum will lead students to better understand their country and get thebasic abilities they need, whereas provincial curricula help them get to knowtheir community and hometown. |
