The following appeared in a memo from the vice president of a food distribution company with food storage warehouses in several cities.
"Recently, we signed a contract with the Fly-Away Pest Control Company to provide pest control services at our fast-food warehouse in Palm City, but last month we discovered that over $20,000 worth of food there had been destroyed by pest damage. Meanwhile, the Buzzoff Pest Control Company, which we have used for many years, continued to service our warehouse in Wintervale, and last month only $10,000 worth of the food stored there had been destroyed by pest damage. Even though the price charged by Fly-Away is considerably lower, our best means of saving money is to return to Buzzoff for all our pest control services."
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
The arguer claims that the company should return to Buzzoff for all their pest control services.To support his claim,he used the past experience as an example.Last month,the warehouse which Fly-Away Pest Control Company is responsible for suffered more damage than the warehouse which Buzzoff if responsible for.Though the argument might seems to be convincing at first glance,it’s reasoning is seriously flawed.A lot more evidence should be given to justify the arguer’s claim.
Firstly, the arguer need to provide evidence that the warehouse in Palm City,which Fly-Away Pest Control Company is in charge of, is the same size as the ware house in Wintervale,which Buzzoff is responsible for. If not given, we can’t conclude that Buzzoff has done a better job than Fly-Away.For example ,the warehouse in Palm City contains food worth of $4,000,000,while the warehouse in Wintervale only contains food worth of $1,000,000. Than we can conclude that the warehouse in Palm city lost only 0.5% of the food,while the warehouse in Wintervale lose 1% of the food.So that we have to say that Fly-Away Company did a better job.
Secondly, apart from size,there are other factors that can affect the conclusion. The arguer need to provide more data about the different environment in these two cities.Unless the weather, temperture are similar in these two cities,we can't come to the conclusion that Buzzoff did a better job. Their might be a possibility that the weather of Palm city is more humid,and it’s harder to prevent pest attacks in Palm,while it’s pretty dry in Wintervale,there is less pest there.So the author should provide more evidence that can support his claim.
Thirdly,a month is only a short time,we can not base our conclusion only on the data of one month.More data of these two companies should be provided.There might be a possibility that Fly-Away did much better in the most of last ten years while Buzzoff did better only in a couple of months.Unless long term data suggest that Buzzoff is better at Pest preventing,I can’t be convinced by the arguer.
Last but not least,even Buzzoff is better at Pest preventing than Fly-Away ,it doesn’t mean that we should sign our contract with it.There might be a chance that their cost outweighs the money it saves for us.In that case,we should still hire Fly-Away.And also,there might be other companies aside from these two,we should consider those ones. |
